CMU's Mark Kamlet agrees that the potential impact of new technologies on human jobs may well prove to be one the biggest challenges countries like the U.S. face.  
 
But, at the same time, he feels that the process of automation will be more nuanced than the projections suggest and believes the humanities will play a critical role.

Pittsburgh and CMU have been trailblazers in autonomous vehicle research and technology.
 
Now, a group of Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences students—led by Philosophy's Danielle Wenner —have proposed a plan to Pittsburgh City Council to use self-driving cars to better the lives of residents, especially those with limited access to public transit.

Always a place to play and learn, a small early childhood program once operated where CMU’s intramural soccer fields now lie.
 
Now, the 96-student laboratory school facilitates observations and research in a range of disciplines, from early childhood development and educational practices to child-friendly furniture design and more. It has been a gem on campus and for Pittsburgh families for 50 years.
Part of the Dietrich College’s Grand Challenge Interdisciplinary Freshman Seminars, first year students spent last semester learning about climate change.
 
Then, they participated in a three-day mock climate change negotiation as negotiators from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change process, more commonly known for arriving at the Paris Climate Agreement.
Sarah Gutekunst (DC’17) spent the last semester at CMU finishing her professional writing major coursework, writing for the Tartan, working on her Senior Honors Program thesis and interning for the Dietrich College.
 
Now a communications assistant for international law firm Fried Frank in their New York City office, she recently talked to us how about these experiences have helped her.
