This e-newsletter is provided to parents to keep you apprised of  CHS events and activities throughout the year.
We also welcome parents of all incoming 8th grade and open enrollment students who will be joining the Central High School student body, 
members of the class of  2022.

This month, our principal's message focuses on a number of issues including an upcoming program for our Black History Month, information on student course selection for the 2018-2019 school  year and more.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week in February 1926 during a week which encompassed the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.  In 1976, during the United States of America's bicentennial President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."   Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month.  Today Black History Month garners support throughout the country as people of all ethnic and social backgrounds discuss the black experience.

In celebration of Black History Month, Central High School welcomes Mr. George Arnold on February 1, 2018 in an afternoon assembly beginning at 1:50 PM.  Mr. Arnold is our featured speaker to begin our month of celebration and learning.  He will present Echos of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a presentation that keeps the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive.  Mr. Arnold has delivered this presentation to more than 1,500 schools, churches and civic organizations since he started memorizing the texts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches and letters in 1969.

Mr. Arnold was born in 1936 when many parts of American life existed under the dark shadow of legalized racial segregation. He is a living witness to the great historical, social, political and cultural changes that have taken place in our country within his own lifetime.  It is from this perspective that he will share the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Central High School students to inspire them to also dream a dream, rooted in the American Dream and Dr. King's desire to create the "Beloved Community".

In the month of February, we will focus on our Student Services and Mathematics departments with information about course offerings, support services opportunities, and other valuable information that students and parents will want to read and learn more about.

***IMPORTANT NOTICE***
Attention:  CHS Parents and  Stud ents

As part of Wisconsin's mandated Balance Assessment System, all 11th graders are required to take the ACT exam on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 and the ACT WorkKeys on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.
  • Juniors must attend school on February 27th from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on February 28th from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Busses will run.
  • Breakfast will be provided for all juniors from 7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. each day.
  • Students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will be excused from attending Central on February 27th and February 28th.

Central High School 2018 Summer School

Summer school offers an excellent opportunity for students to earn credits toward high school graduation, learn in a relaxed environment and stay connected with their friends during the summer.  CHS 2018 Summer School forms were mailed home January 25, 2018 with report cards for CHS students in grades 9 through 11.

Summer school registration forms are due February 16, 2018 in order to be included in the summer school lottery.  On March 16, 2018 preliminary summer school schedules with fees will be mailed home along with a confirmation letter indicating that you have been placed in summer school.

The dates of this year's summer school will be June 18 - July 26, 2018.  Summer school courses run Monday through Friday. There is no school during the week of July 2 - July 6, 2018.  Instruction will be delivered in multiple formats including face to face instruction, Apex online learning and in a blended learning format.  Half credit courses will run in two sessions.  Session 1 is from 7:00 am - 9:40 am.  Session 2 is from 9:45 am to 12:25 pm.  Full credit courses run in one session from 7:00 am - 12:25 pm.  In order to receive a passing grade and/or credit, students enrolled in summer courses are allowed to miss no more than three (3) absences per course.  Transportation by bus will be provided to students enrolled for a full summer school day or two sessions from 7:00 am to 12:25 pm.

Advanced Placement Give Students Edge on College
Central High School for many years has been known for its quality Advanced Placement course offerings providing students a wide array of courses that will give those students who take these courses the opportunity to earn college credit for high school courses. CHS Curriculum Options Provide
a Variety of 
Opportunities for Students


Students will soon be registering for classes for the 2017-2018 school year. It is important for parents, students and educators to approach course selection with a focus on long-range planning. With thoughtful planing, students can leave high school with college credits, work experience, and/or industry certification.  Central has a growing number of curriculum options which parents are encouraged to explore.

Academic and Career Planning

A few years ago, the state of Wisconsin passed legislation entitled Chapter PI-26. This legislation requires every school district to provide academic and career-planning services to pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 beginning in the 2017−18 school year. Academic and Career Planning (ACP) is a student-driven, adult-supported, ongoing process that actively engages students and helps them understand their own interests, strengths, values, and learning styles; create a vision of their future; develop individual goals; and prepare a personal plan for achieving their vision and goals.             
 
Career Cruising (CC) is a web-based platform and valuable resource for Academic and Career Planning. Students at Central have been working through Career Cruising to explore their interests and different career pathways, learn about the training requirements and skills needed to be successful in various professions, prepare for Aspire and ACT testing, and to learn about the educational options available to them at Central and beyond. Students are also utilizing Career Cruising for their upcoming course selection for the 2018-19 school year.
 
Parents of students in grades 9 to 11 will receive information on how to access the Career Cruising Parent Portal within the next week or two. We encourage parents and guardians to discuss career planning with your students and review their portfolios in Career Cruising.

VIRTUAL PROGRAM 
(NEW FALL 2018) 

Our virtual program provides an opportunity for students to take all of their courses online and graduate with a Central High School District of Westosha diploma. Students participating in the virtual program are required to complete at least five virtual courses a semester. Students may take up to seven virtual courses a semester and have the option of taking up to two courses on campus. This program is only available to students living within District boundaries.
