Parshat Va'era

What plagues you? In today's sophisticated world, there may be many answers to that question. We have so many responsibilities, pressures and demands that weigh on our heads on a daily basis. We have children and grandchildren to care and provide for. Now that people are living much longer lives, you can add taking care of aging parents into the mix. We have high pressure jobs, social norms and a very demanding Jewish lifestyle that consumes us.

But is that a plague or a blessing? Our Parsha teaches us about plagues which served as warnings and punishments for the awful behavior of the Pharaoh and the Egyptians. One has to believe that when someone - individual or an entire nation - enslaves another, there will be a price to pay. The Makkot were only the beginning.

I think we just misuse the word plague. If we look back at our lives and remove all those things that give us the pressure - the family, the job, the community, the religion, - then we would be utterly devoid of all meaning. That is real plague!
