This month we are exploring Justice.
Unitarian Universalism has a long history of being "with you in this" as individuals and in the collective as a faith tradition with those who would be "othered." Rev. Kevin shares reflections this morning upon some of historical moments of UU's being on the forefront for Justice, and where our calling might be today.

~ Building Expansion Team ~
Congregation Approves Capital Campaign!
The congregation voted last Sunday to proceed with a Capital Campaign to run concurrently with our annual Stewardship Campaign. The Capital Campaign will assess the ability of our members and friends to repair and expand our home at 510 N. Leroux.
Decision Points:
April: The stewardship committee will conduct personal, one-on-one visits with all members and friends not only for the annual pledge campaign for Beacon operating expenses, but also to ascertain the capacity of individuals to provide funds during a 3-to-5-year Capital Campaign to pay for the building expansion plan.
May: The results of both campaigns will be released and discussed in a Town Hall meeting. The architect will have upgraded the building plans to about 30% completion so that we will have a more clear view of what they will cost. Knowing our financial situation will enable us to review building plans and determine whether or not we can afford to proceed.
June: At the annual Congregational Meeting the congregation will have reviewed the building plans and our financial capability, and vote on whether or not to proceed with building.

~ Community Action Committee ~
Thanks to Beacon's commitment to Share the Plate with approved community partners! For January's undesignated Sunday morning offering money beyond $300 will be presented to Sun Sounds of Flagstaff.
If you would like to nominate an organization to be a community partner, pick up the application in the CAC folder at the bottom of the office stairs. Information and instructions for Share the Plate partners are described on that form.
The CAC is comprised of Joanne Parkes, Sue Strobel, Lynda Dorweiler, Rev. Kevin Lawson and Rich Clark.

~ Committee on Shared Ministry~

Join us for a Workshop on "The Anatomy of Trust"
How do you create and maintain trust in yourself, your family, your friends, your community at Beacon and beyond? If you want to learn more, please plan to attend a one-hour workshop led by Dru Monroe and Nancy Paxton, on
Sunday, Jan. 14, in the purple room, immediately after the Worship Service. We will begin with a screening of Brene Brown's inspiring short talk, "The Anatomy of Trust," followed by a brief discussion of your experiences of trust and why it is so important in creating healthy relationships.
If you are of a certain age, you may have grown up hearing the slogan, "Don't trust anyone over 30." Today, the airwaves and electronic media are littered with endless examples of trust betrayed. Many of us have experienced the pain of betrayal, and we often find it difficult to rebuild trust in ourselves, in those we love, or with members of our community. A few weeks ago, the Committee on Shared Ministry watched this powerful video, and all of us felt enlightened by the experience. We would love to share this short video with you and hear about your experiences with trust, so please come to this workshop on Sunday. Snacks will be provided.

~ Social Justice Allies (SJA) ~

SJA meeting following the service in the Purple Room.
Beacon members, friends and visitors are welcome to participate. The agenda include an update on plans for our monthly winter/spring film series on democracy and public engagement, co-sponsored by SJA and the Flagstaff Book Group, and planning for UU Day at the Legislature (DATL) Feb. 19, Presidents' Day (see below).
Following the regular meeting, UUJAZ (UU Justice Arizona) network executive director Rev. Lisa McDaniel-Hutchings will facilitate a Zoom electronic training at Beacon for UU DATL. We don't yet have the exact schedule for the after-meeting training session, but we're promoting a 1:00pm start time. Stay tuned!
Monday, February 19 (Presidents' Day
):
UU Day at the Legislature (DATL),
an all-day gathering at the Capitol in Phoenix. It's both a statewide UU rally and an opportunity to exchange priorities in small groups with our respective legislators.
Emergency Plan for Beacon
With congregations around the country feeling especially vulnerable these days to serious unexpected disruption--or worse--SJA agree that it's prudent to develop clear systems for protecting people participating in our activities at Beacon. While a Beacon policy on Disruptive Behavior (Section 200.8) was approved in 2015, attention to highly dangerous emergencies is scant. Sue Strobel, Beacon-and SJA-member, has been researching resources for guidance, including a request that a local law enforcement specialist visit our building and offer suggestions for congregational safety.
She will present information gathered so far to Beacon's Core Leadership Council at their meeting January 17 and follow-up with the Board of Trustees the following week.

~ Religious Exploration ~
Last Sunday the RE committee spoke to the congregation about the exciting cultural and programmatic changes happening not only at Beacon but sweeping the nation like a locomotive. A notable shift in preferences and priorities is actively being studied an addressed by many religious professionals. The RE committee at Beacon has boarded that train and asked,
- Are you interested in this shift that is taking place in our cultural climate?
- Do you think your voice and ideas could help guide us?
- Are you short on time and energy but want to be a part of a national conversation about the death of the traditional Sunday school and the future of Faith formation?

~ In Community ~
Ariana shared that she and Sami will be moving to Denver this summer and they are both saddened to be leaving the Beacon community.
Jack R. shared the joy of his son returning from Qatar where he worked as a pilot for five years. Anybody need a pilot?
Preston shared that, at age 70, he is retired but asked to return as a climate coach.
Rich C. shared the joy of Roz's birthday!
Anne C. shared that she is moving to the Valley next summer, she is presently in the process of emptying her house. She appreciates good thoughts and energy as she takes down her house and shares items out with family members.
