6 Questions and a Cup of Coffee with...James Hersh
In all the ways music moves us, I want to be right there. I'm about music's power to reach us, hold us and keep us together. I sing in the small room, the big room, the patient's room and the classroom. Under a big sky, over the campfire, on a stage. I worked as a songwriter in Los Angeles and Nashville, finding out they were not the places I belonged. I try to put my heart into the songs I write and I reach out with my work.
1. Can you describe your call to ministry?
As I became a husband and father, music became a pathway to purpose for me. I left behind the notions that the music industry had instilled in me, and took up the mission that I had something to offer people in certain settings and circumstances. I believe songs uniquely tell a story, and live music can connect powerfully when hearts are open. I've tried to become the best live music provider I can be, while writing story songs that have the message of faith.
2. What is the best part of your ministry now?
No one invites me to entertain an audience. I'm asked to plow into emotions, memories and hearts.
3. What is one fact about you that would surprise people?
I have been a busker on Venice Beach (CA) and London.
4. What are three things Christian educators need to keep their eye on?
How technology is changing our relationships (for the better and the worse); how the arts set the attitudes (music and film, particularly); and paths to youth isolation
5. What are some of your favorite resources?
6. How can we pray for you?
To simply serve as a conduit of Grace to the children of God.
