Sunday, January 14
Pastors Melanie Marsh Baum and Amy Starr Redwine will
present a dialogue sermon titled "On the Basis of Love," putting themes of Martin Luther King Jr's life and writings in conversation with scriptures. The Cleveland School of the Arts' R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir, Dr. William Woods, director, will be participating in the service along with the Covenant Choir.
Scriptures are James 2:14-26 and Philemon

We welcome the R. Nathaniel Dett Choir from the Cleveland School of the Arts, Dr. William Woods, to our service, joining voices together with the Covenant Choir in a stirring anthem by Jeffrey L. Ames, who teaches and directs choirs at Belmont University, Nashville, TN. The anthem addresses strife and violence around the world and incorporates two phrases from the Gregorian Easter hymn, Victimae paschali laudes. CSA presents two other spirituals, the first, "I Stood on the River Jordan," references "the old ship of Zion," a metaphorical vessel representing the underground railroad piloted by famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The other anthem, "Freedom Plow," by Rollo Dillworth, is based on a poem by Langston Hughes (1902-1967).
The children will have Sunday School this week. The memory verse for January 14 is: "May the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be pleasing your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14

A MATCHING CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM is offered by a number of companies. If your employer offers the program you can designate any charitable organization to which you donate to receive a matching gift from the company.
All you need to do is contact your HR department beginning of the year to fill out a form stating your donation to your charity -- Church of the Covenant -- in the prior year. That form will need to be verified and signed by the Church office.
As a result, the Church of the Covenant will receive a check donation from your company. This is a great way to multiply donations to the Church!

Pray for those affected by gun violence
Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 893 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 23 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. The names of those at least 18 years of age are: Andrew Hart, Timothy White, Kameron J. Westbrook, Adrian Andrew Burke Sr., Cornelius Ray Love II, Israel Castro, Matthew Daniel Miller, Sha-Var De-Ez Bradley, Antoine Bailey, Douglas Clements, Michael C. Scott, Melvin Ephraim, Bohdan T. Szemeczko, Richard James Carlo Jr., Valery Jean Dressler, Esmat Aminalla, Stephen Mazzola, Tony Lee Porter, Jared Plesec, Errone Cedric McCrimon, Rickey Gray, and Steven Dwayne Sopko. Eight of those who died were by suicide, and one victim was under eighteen.
Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, each month we pray for people affected by gun violence and to reduce the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell.
The Church of the Covenant partners with God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, to reduce gun violence. Go to

 2018 Homeless Stand Down, Saturday January 20
Please bring donations to the Church Office by Wednesday, January 17
We are currently accepting items for the 2018 Homeless Stand Down which will take place on Saturday January 20th. The following items may be dropped off in the church office from now until Wednesday January 17th.
- New or Gently Used: waterproof boots, winter coats, reusable shopping bags.
- New Only: athletic socks, adult waterproof gloves, kids and adult size hooded sweatshirts, adult knit hats.

oin a team of six to eight people on January 21 and/or 28 and April 8 and/or 15 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm to assist in preparing and serving the community meal that follows their worship service. Weather-Related Church Closing
According to the church's Personnel Manual, church staff will determine on a case by case basis if the church is to be closed due to inclement weather. In the event that the church is closed, an email notification will be sent to those on our mailing list and a notification will appear on the home page of the church website. If you have a church meeting or event that is affected by a closing, the staff member associated with that event will contact you.
