P
arents and Guardians,
This past Friday, we had the opportunity to host our WSMS 8th graders for "Bump Up Day". Those students got to tour parts of LHS and hear from a panel of current students who shared information about different curricular opportunities at LHS. The panel of 14 students did a great job of introducing the courses and opportunities available at LHS, as well as encouraging 8th graders to pursue their passions and be open to taking classes they may not have considered before. With registration for 8th graders coming in the next few weeks, "Bump Up Day" was developed to help incoming 9th graders as they make selections for their 2018-19 class schedules. We will also have our annual Showcase on Monday, February 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the LHS Commons. This event is for parents and students to get more information about course offerings in addition to the different clubs and extra-curricular opportunities available at LHS. See the details below regarding some parent registration meetings as well. Don't forget this Friday, February 2nd is an Early Release Day for all LISD students. The day officially ends at 1:00 pm and buses will run at that time. All LHS students will be dismissed for lunch at 12:15 pm, and those who have transportation are able to leave campus at that time.
Please take a few minutes to review the important information and upcoming events listed below. I hope you and your student have a great week.
Sincerely,
Chris Mayfield Principal Lovejoy High School

The Red Ledger Newspaper/UIL Journalism
The Red Ledger newspaper staff received two big honors last week, earning the title of School Newspapers Online (SNO) Distinguished Site and the Gold Medal rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA).
The staff was the second newspaper in the country to be named a distinguished site this year from SNO. They had to meet criteria to earn badges in Story Page Excellence, Site Excellence, Continuous Coverage, Audience Engagement, Excellence in Writing and Multimedia Excellence. This was the fifth consecutive year for The Red Ledger to be named a distinguished site.
The Gold Medal is the highest rating awarded by CSPA. A thorough evaluation of the newspaper website awarded The Red Ledger staff 906 out of 1,000 possible points and granted "All-Columbian Honors" in two of three possible categories, verbal and visual.
On Jan. 13th, newspaper staff members traveled to Flower Mound High School to compete in the Flower Mound UIL Invitational. Sophomore Kelsey Carroll placed third in the headline writing and fifth in editorial writing. Lily Hager placed sixth in headline writing.

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.
Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.
We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on February 13th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.
Click here to sign up to be a Senior Project Judge.
