Final Words from the Cross

Our Lenten Bible study will begin on Sunday, February 18, during the 9:00 am Sunday school time. Pastor Tony will be leading us through the Adam Hamilton book Final Words from the Cross . This study will take a look at the last six hours when Jesus hung dying on the cross and to what are traditionally called his "seven last words."

If there is enough interest, Pastor Tony will also lead this same study on Wednesdays at 10:00 am beginning on February 21 and ending on March 28. Please contact the church office at 272-8921 or [email protected] if you are interested in participating in the Wednesday morning class.

A Word from the Pastor

Dear Friends,

We all make mistakes that we think have ruined everything and make it impossible for anything to ever be right again. Most of the time these mistakes are only small setbacks, and yes, some are devastating, but we can be forgiven by God.

During the first half of the 1929 Rose Bowl football game between Georgia Tech and the University of California, a California player by the name Roy Riegals recovered a fumble, got turned around and ran over 60 yards-the wrong way. The result was a two point safety for Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech won the game, yes, by two points.

Of course, Riegals was devastated and did not want to play in the second half, but his coach showed faith in him by making him play the rest of the game. A story like this makes you think, "What a great coach!" As I read the third chapter of Jonah I thought, "Wow, what a great God!"

There are times in my life when I feel like giving up because I believe that I have gone the wrong way in my work for God, and I wonder how God can forgive me and continue to use me. What I have found is that God does not give up on us. What a great God we have!

I've got great news! God does not give up on us. He just keeps using us, giving encouragement and showing confidence in us. God continues to use ordinary people-ones like us who have made mistakes-to continue God's work here on earth.

The story of Jonah is a wonderful reminder of this truth: God believes in us. Jonah was delivered from drowning and used by God to give a message to the people of Ninevah, and God's goodness was extended to Ninevah.

Both Jonah and Ninevah, though doing wrong, were given new beginnings. We may not be guaranteed a second chance, but God is willing to see past wrongs and make us new.

There are consequences to our sin and disobedience, as Roy Riegals found out when his team lost the Rose Bowl game, but just as his coach did, God continues to have faith in us. "Wow, what a great God we have!!!"

News from Lowman's February Church Council Meeting

Lowman's Church Council usually meets on the second Sunday of every month at 2:30 pm. All members and interested parties are welcome to attend. Here are some highlights of our last meeting.

Evangelism/Missions: Amanda Garner, Carla Hazen
Looking for other ways for Lowman congregation to serve (to start a spark) Some ideas:
 * Barbecue with Sheltered Living and Loving Hearts - go to their group homes
 * Pickup team - to bring people to church
 * Help our rep to Doorstep, Susan Venis, get more people to contribute
 * Once a month have a mission moment in worship

Worship/Music: Wendy Smith
 * Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14 - service at 7:30 pm
 * Palm Sunday, March 25 th - will probably participate in the Palm Walk again
 * Easter, April 1st - Son's Up service, breakfast during Sunday school hour, cantata during 10:15 service

Children & Family Ministry: Lauri Wright
 * March 11- basket auction begins
 * April 8 - baked potato bar
 * VBS - July 13-15 - Christmas in July (weekend VBS) Operation Christmas Child will be the mission project
 * Mother's Day - have SS kids sing a song in worship
 * Quarterly mission projects to include care kits for Sole Hope in Uganda; fall mission project to collect items for veterans; another project would be to make and take something to shut-ins

Lay leader : Pastor Tony said we should be finding someone for this position, a person to work as a liaison between the pastor and the congregation. This person lets the pastor know what the current feelings are in the congregation, also could help to lead worship services

Technology/Communication: Adam Schafer
Electronic sign has been changed - should we have a message calendar regarding what's going to be on it?

SPRC: Jackie Howard
New member this year:
Freda Ensley has now been hired as a nursery worker - will look for others to use "as needed"
Had a nursery during the Evidence of Journey concert; want to provide a nursery for memorial services potentially

Finance: Rosie Cooper
We recommend to the council that we pay 20% of our Mission Shares in 2018 - divide this percentage into monthly amounts to meet the amount on a monthly basis rather than wait until the end of the year. We'll be showing a video in worship to tell the congregation what Mission Shares pay for; the recommendation was adopted.

Housing CD ($100k+) can be used for capital improvements. Jackie moved that the Council strongly recommend that the Trustees adopt the recommendation of the Finance Team to use monies from this CD to match dollar for dollar (up t0 $40K) the funds raised for the construction of a new playground and any landscaping necessary to the project; motion passed.

Stewardship: Diane Schafer
Volunteer service inventory - then pair persons who already volunteer with those who want to become involved.

Lauri talked about the mite boxes that will be given to SS kids during Lent, extending this idea to give mite boxes to the congregation also to help pay Mission Share. Diane will remind the congregation every Sunday during Lent to continue. (A mite box is a small cardboard box in which to collect change.)

Trustees: Kevin Garner
 * Water main break out front during the really cold weather - most subsequent problems have been addressed.
 * Water shutoffs replaced in the men's restroom
 * Need to reach out to people to find who has skills and/or connection to help get things done
 * Add new piece (not equipment) to our HVAC system: McElroy's maintenance service agreement
 * Track lighting in the sanctuary- will continue this project that David Mills had been working on
 * Blessings tree - have sold a stone and six leaves - Gregg Smith is working on the trunk, etc. We believe that after the base is on the wall, more people will be prompted to buy leaves.
 * Pastor Tony is getting info on an active shooter class.
 * As of today, we have $32K (which includes Memorial match) toward a new playground - this is to be a "right now" (this spring) project
 * Jr & Sr High room renovation

Memorials: Diane Schafer
In the future and on a regular basis, we will provide memorial reports to chairs so they can make decisions on how to use monies, especially designated ones

Youth: Susan Conrade
 * Jr-Sr High room to be renovated - kids will help
 * Mission work for youth to do
 * Need to build a stronger foundation

Stephen Ministers: Diane Schafer
Cancer care continuing ed will begin in February.

Pastor Tony's comments:
 * We welcome Amanda Conrade to the position of lay member to Annual Conference.
 * Church security - need to look into this - what will we do in an emergency - Topeka PD would do a security evaluation, just need to connect with the department - we need to practice a plan and we need to do this during worship
 * Time, talent, giftedness survey - where people would be interested in helping in the church
 * Feb. 11 will be an all committees meeting. Lunch will be served.
 * Unification talks with Crestview - we'll be talking with the DS and the facilitator this week - and will share with the congregation EVENTUALLY
 * The Lowman congregation gives a great amount of care (illnesses, deaths, etc.) as has been exhibited especially in the past few weeks. How can we, as followers of Jesus, change people's lives?
 * Pastor Tony and Bryce are working on email for prayer concerns, to include shut-ins.
 * Lots of ideas came out of the young people joining the unification talks - mainly that Lowman needs to ACT - we are not a dying church and we need to show that!

Old Business
 * Kevin Garner - mass text messaging could be piggybacked on the prayer concern emails
 * LifeTouch mobile directory app is awesome. (They have a condolence package that is FREE, providing pictures of a loved one.)
 * There is a communication gap between committees and within committees.
 * Adam is working on the chimes.
 * The square is awesome - can be used for any fundraiser or other event.
 * It was suggested that every event/fundraiser give 10% to help pay Mission Shares.

Meetings with Lunch

All committees will meet after the 10:15 worship service on Sunday, February 11, to make plans for2018. A picnic lunch of hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad will be served.

Almost Basket Time

Big basket, little basket, kitchen basket, spa basket! Bird basket, baby basket, sports basket, toy basket! Get your creative juices flowing, make a basket, and turn it into cash for camp scholarships.

Plan on having your donated auction basket to church on Friday, March 9. Bidding will start on Sunday the 11th and end after lunch at our annual camp baked potato bar on Sunday, April 8. All proceeds provide scholarships for Lowman kids to go to Camp Chippewa and Institute. Ten percent of the money raised will be donated to our Mission Shares.

What's All This Stuff about Mission Share & Mission Agency Support?

So "Where does my money go?" is always the big question, and rightfully so. You need to ask and be informed.

Part of the budget for Lowman United Methodist Church, as it is for every UMC in the Great Plains United Methodist Conference, includes our support of the Great Plains Conference. Some of you will remember this as apportionments. We now know them as Mission Share and Mission Agency Support.

These requests are based on the Biblical tithe. The Mission Share formula is based upon 10 percent of each church's total operating income. Our 2018 Mission Share is based on our operating income for the year 2016.

Each Great Plains Conference church is also asked to contribute 1 percent toward Mission Agency Support. Agencies included are some of our Wesleyan institutions, The Big Garden Project in Omaha, United Methodist Open Door in Wichita, Wesley House in Pittsburg, Kansas, and several other agencies.

Besides the agencies listed above, the funds go to support the Episcopal Office by providing the Bishop's residence, covering the expenses of the cabinet and district personnel and operations. It also provides funding for Clergy Excellence, the Board of Ordained Ministry, Transition into Ministry, and other administrative costs.

We are helping with lay leadership development, campus and youth ministry, and new church starts, Volunteers in Mission and disaster response, and with social justice and local ethnic concerns of the communities within the Conference.

We are also helping with the costs of providing information technology, communications, and accounting services within the Conference.

As you can see, your money goes to many different places and is used for many different purposes-all to help share God's love with the world.

What is Lowman's 2018 Share?

A church's apportionment is made of two parts: Mission Share and Mission Agency Support. For 2018, the total asking for Lowman's part of Mission Share and Mission Agency Support is $29,417.00. Mission Share is $26,743.00 and Mission Agency Support is $2,674.00.

Now we know how important Mission Share and Mission Agency Support are to our Methodist Communities, but did you know that last year we were only able to pay 12.4% of our apportionment? Lowman UMC was 17
th in the bottom 20 churches when it came to paying our part of the Mission Share and Mission Agency Support. Let's be better in 2018!

In January, the Administrative Board voted to improve our giving to the Great Plains UMC Conference. We voted to pay at least 20% of our part this year and more if we can. We plan to reach that goal, which amounts to $5,883.40, by using the plan below:

* Our goal is to pay $490 every month. (Stay on top of it all year.)

* Committee fund raisers will allocate 10% of their profits to Mission Share and Agency Support.

  * Encourage everyone to chip in each month, when they can, an extra 10% for Mission Share & Agency Support.

Together we can meet or exceed our goal. We will be better in 2018!

Christmas in July VBS

We are planning our VBS Christmas in July for the weekend of July 13, 14 & 15. Want to help plan this important event? Call Lauri Wright at 785-554-9305 or email her at [email protected]. Everyone is welcome. We need your good ideas and organizational abilities!

Craft Workshop

Seven members of Lowman Crafters met in the Chi Rho Room on January 13. They discussed recommendations for improving next year's Holiday Craft Fair. A workshop on making angel ribbon ornaments will be held on Thursday, February 15 at 1:00 pm in the Chi Rho Room. Everyone is welcome to come.

Inclement Weather?

If Lowman activities are cancelled because of bad weather, the cancellation will be sent to our three local television stations and their websites. It will also be put on Lowman's website at www.lowmanumc.org.

United Methodist Women's News

United Methodist Women's Weekend 2018 is near! This year's UMW Weekend is February 10-11. Our theme is Native American missions and ministries, and our speaker will be Judith oeller, a Native American and member of Kansas Avenue UMC. There have been many ongoing changes in the area of Native American ministries, and I think we will all find Judith's message interesting and informative.

Thanks to all the Lowman UMW members who have agreed to help be a part of both services-4:00 on Saturday afternoon and 10:15 on Sunday morning. Remember that we are encouraged to wear any combination of red, black, and white.

Join Our Mailing List
Lowman United Methodist Church is a "W + 2" congregation. Our membership covenant calls for all our members to participate in worship weekly and to take part in at least two small groups--one that is designed to help each member grow spiritually, and one that is designed to help each member be of service in the congregation and/or in the community.
