Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders
Trust YAC-ers meet with State Senator René García on
the senate floor.
The Children's Trust Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) just returned from its annual trip to the state capital to meet with legislators, participate in advocacy events and catch a glimpse of government in motion.
As child and family advocates from across the state convened to lobby on behalf of life-changing issues such as immigration, education and health care during Florida Children's Week, YAC-ers enjoyed once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as speaking one-on-one with their local legislators, including Representatives Nicholas Duran and Cynthia Stafford; and facilitating and participating in an anti-youth gun violence panel.

Acknowledging a Hero
Wil J. Blechman, M.D.
Another Children's Week highlight for The Trust was witnessing one of our former board vice chairs, Wil J. Blechman, M.D., accept the 2018 Chiles Advocacy Award. This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of one of the most tireless, effective and inspiring child advocates in the state. Congratulations Dr. Blechman!
Honoring the Legacy of MLK
Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson and The Trust's Donovan Lee-Sin.
The Children's Trust, a longtime supporter of Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson's groundbreaking and nationally recognized 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project, once again sponsored the organization's annual scholarship breakfast - its 25th - honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Keynote speaker Tyler Perry presided over the event, where 58 Wilson scholars from the Class of 2018 were awarded scholarships, and a particular high note for The Trust was seeing our very own Donovan Lee-Sin, director of public policy and community engagement, be named a 5000 role model and mentor. After the breakfast we joined the nation and our community in celebrating MLK Day, with a parade sponsorship in Liberty City; The Trust also supported MLK events in West Perrine in the days leading up to the holiday.

Helping to Empower Young Women
Trust-ers have a blast while doing good at Marlins Park.
Trust staffers laced up their sneakers and hit the field in support of She Can Coach, a fundraising and awareness campaign focused on fostering coaching opportunities for women and ensuring that young girls in vulnerable communities have strong female mentors and role models in their lives. The campaign, an initiative of Up2Us Sports, culminated for Miami at Marlins Park with a kickball tournament that raised nearly $40,000. Presenting sponsors were the Marlins Foundation and the Take Charge Foundation; cosponsors included The Miami Foundation, United Way of Miami-Dade, FIU, Overtown Youth Center, Egon Zehnder and Core Assets fitness instructors.

Providing New Grant Opportunities
Providers are walked through how to apply for Trust grants.
The Children's Trust recently released five-year grant opportunities for both youth development and parenting programs services, a combined financial commitment of more than $316 million to Miami-Dade County children and families, with additional grants covering other critical areas to come.

Telling Your Stories
Aimee Mir Ariola and Emily Cardenas discuss mentoring programs on 10 with The Trust.
10 with The Trust, our 10 minute biweekly talk show broadcast on Facebook Live, hosted an engaging and eclectic roster of guests, including Aimee Mir Ariola/Big Brothers, Big Sisters Miami; Earl Maulding/Actors' Playhouse and Young Talent Big Dreams; Constance Collins/Lotus House; and Rosa Maria Plasencia/Amigos for Kids. The Trust partners and funded providers all shared amazing stories about the work they're doing in the community, as well as how people can get connected to the services they provide. Join us for the next 10 with The Trust at noon this Thursday, February 1, when we'll broadcast live from the main branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System to celebrate Black History Month with a selection of relevant children's book titles.
