San Francisco Giants
|
The San Francisco Giants announced on Jan. 15 they had acquired five-time National League All-Star and former 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen along with cash considerations from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kyle Crick, minor league outfielder Bryan Reynolds and international signing bonus pool money. "It's no secret that we were looking to further add run production to our lineup", said Giants Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean. "Anytime you have the opportunity to bring aboard someone with such a track record, you have to jump on it." McCutchen is also a four-time Sliver Slugger award winner (2012-15), 2012 NL Gold Glove winner and a winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in 2015. He has topped the 20-homer mark in each of the last seven years and has driven in at least 79 runs in each of his past seven seasons. Reprinted courtesy San Francisco Giants.

Oakland A's broadcasters meet!
Play-by-play announcer Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, pictured with Oakland A's fan Sadie Sprenkle, now enters his 24
th
season as the Voice of the A's for all Spanish broadcasts.
For a sixth straight year, Pi-Gonzalez will also do selected games for the Los Angeles Angels on Fox Sports Network West in Southern California. Sprenkle's career as an A's broadcaster is just getting started, as she was selected to announce Oakland A's players leading off the bottom of the third inning in their game on Sunday, July 3, 2016, versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. Her selection was an Oakland A's Kids' Club perk.

Stanford Cardinal 79 v. Arizona Wildcats 42
The Stanford Cardinal (14-8, 8-2) raced out of the gate for a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, sending their Pac-12 opponent, the Arizona Wildcats (5-16, 1-9) , to a 79-42 defeat. Sophomore guard
DiJonai Carrington (21)
scored just two points, but affected the game in a myriad of other ways, grabbing seven rebounds, handing out five assists and collecting three steals. Photo by Rich Yee.

Sophomore guard Anna Wilson (3) breaks down court, ahead of the trailing defense and would pick up eight points on an evening when points were plentiful.
Stanford's schedule is about to get harder, as this weekend as they travel north for games against No. 17 Oregon State and No. 7 Oregon. Photo by Rich Yee.

Stanford teammates had reason to smile, as a stingy Cardinal defense limited the Wildcats to a 27.8 shooting percent for the game and just six second-quarter points.

San Jose Earthquakes
|
The San Jose Earthquakes have signed 15-year-old midfielder Gilbert Fuentes to a Homegrown Player contract. He becomes the youngest-ever signing by San Jose, taking the distinction from defender Jacob Akanyirige, who signed with the club last month shortly before turning 16. Fuentes is also the second-youngest player currently in MLS (SKC - Gianluca Busio) and the ninth-youngest player to sign a professional contract in Major League Soccer history. "Signing Gilbert to a Homegrown contract was a priority for us and I would like to thank the Fuentes family, agent Rob Moore, MLS and our entire staff in the youth development area for their commitment to get this done," said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. "At just 15 years old, he has quickly separated himself from his peers thanks to a strong technical ability and high soccer IQ, which has garnered the attention of the U.S. Soccer Federation." More than 400 John's March Against Stomach Cancer participants walked and ran the Sonoma Raceway road course on Saturday at the West Coast's largest fundraising walk for No Stomach for Cancer, bringing the event's seven-year total to more than $110,000 raised for gastric cancer research and awareness.
Walkers, runners and even dogs enjoyed a spin around the 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course on foot during the event, which is held in honor of John Cardinale, the long-time Sonoma Raceway spokesman who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with stomach cancer.
"
The passion and dedication for raising money and awareness for gastric cancer is incredibly evident at this event. It was so well attended, and it was wonderful to be able to meet people who could talk openly about their concerns with us," said No Stomach For Cancer board member Terri Beach, who attended John's March for the first time. "There is clearly a need for more support and research for stomach cancer, and with the help of events like this, we are getting closer to alternative treatments and care." Rafael Palmeiro at 53 -- Needs One More Game
|
Rafael Palmeiro has the numbers to be in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Now, the 53-year-old said, "I am missing the game," and he wants to come back to the MLB. However, his chances are not very good, as his prime days have passed.
Palmeiro was born in Havana, Cuba, and played in the MLB for 20 years (1986-2005) with the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Rangers (again) and returned to the Orioles for his last two seasons in the league.
On July 15, 2005, Palmeiro's last season, he was at Safeco Field in Seattle, WA. In the fifth inning he hit a double to the left field wall against Mariners pitcher Joel Pineiro. That was Palmeiro's 3,000 career hit. I was broadcasting the Mariners games, in Spanish that year, and I had the call of that game. ESPN Deportes picked it up and I have the CD of that moment. Palmeiro also received a copy of the CD. After the game I interviewed Palmeiro, who was very happy and gracious.
Palmeiro is the only Cuban-born player to reach the 3,000 hit plateau. In my opinion, he finished with excellent numbers that are Cooperstown-worthy: 20 career years combined for a .288 batting average, 3,020 hits, 585 home runs, 1,835 runs batted in, all in a total of 2,831 games played.
Unfortunately Palmeiro's career didn't ended well. Former Rangers teammate and fellow Cuban, Jose Canseco, identified Palmeiro as a fellow steroid user in his 2005 book,
Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big
, and claimed he injected Palmeiro with steroids.
On March 17, 2005, Palmeiro appeared at a Congressional hearing about steroids in baseball and, while under oath, denied ever using steroids. He stated, "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids, period. I don't know how to say it any more clearly than that."
Five months later, on August 1, 2005, Palmeiro was suspended for 10 days after testing positive for steroids.
Palmeiro is part of that ugly phase in the game, the Steroid Era. After an excellent career, he wants to comeback and play in the major leagues. "There is no doubt in my mind that I can do it," he recently said.
This January 24, the inductees into the Hall of Fame were announced but his name will not be on the list.
For Palmeiro, his career numbers alone could help him secure a spot in the Hall of Fame. However, the steroid scandal has caused him to fall off the ballot.
Here is the deal: If Rafael Palmeiro plays in one more MLB game, he will become re-eligible for the Hall of Fame.
Buena suerte, Rafael!
