New Board Member Spotlight:
Alison Rogish
Alison Rogish became involved with SCAN after attending and hosting the Progressive Dinner for a number of years. Her friend Amy Quigley, this year's Progressive Dinner Chair, introduced her to SCAN's work. Alison is serving on the Progressive Dinner planning committee this year.
Alison also learned about SCAN through past Board member and Deloitte colleague, Brad Welles. Alison serves as a Managing Director at Deloitte. Alison is from Upstate New York, but she and her family have lived in Richmond since 2004. Alison stays busy with her 3 children (2 boys and a girl), who are all very involved in community sports. Alison coaches her 5 and a half year old daughter's soccer team and is learning guitar with her middle son. A fun fact about Alison is that she recently served as an extra for the TV series Homeland. Look for her on the upcoming season, which filmed here in Richmond!
Alison was drawn to SCAN by the important work and the exponential impact that the organization has on our community by reaching children early. She shared a belief that anything good in life comes through children. It is important to invest in the education and emotional and physical wellbeing of children in order to set these children and society as a whole up for success. Alison believes in the importance of local nonprofits and served on the YWCA Board for 6 years. Alison shared that she was deeply moved by the emotional testimony of three Richmond CASA volunteers at the SCAN Breakfast this past fall. Stories of SCAN's work and the families involved in our programs gets to the heart of why this work is so impactful.

Stewards of Children teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for individuals concerned about the safety of children as well as organizations that serve youth. Stewards of Children is the only nationally distributed program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors.

SCAN is honored to be one of the benefiting organizations of Deep Run High School's Annual Marathon Dance!
This fundraiser benefits local community charities, with Deep Run High School students of all grades, coming together to raise money for these causes. Money is raised through ongoing community fundraisers, and a marathon dance lasting for 27 hours, where students dance continuously.
Please join SCAN staff at the below fundraisers which support the Dance Marathon! Funds raised by students through these efforts will support SCAN's Henrico Child Advocacy Center.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Thank you for joining us this April as we fundraise and promote awareness within our community.

On Sunday February 11th 2018, SCAN supporters will come together for an evening to benefit SCAN. This fundraising dinner will feature 5 special courses, complete with wine parings, and prepared by award winning chef Walter Bundy at his highly acclaimed restaurant, Shagbark.
This dinner will seek to raise funds to support the work that SCAN does to help children and families in our community. Not only will this event raise important, unrestricted funds for SCAN, it will bring together community members and supporters of SCAN and continue to bring awareness to child abuse and neglect issues in our community.

Jeanine Harper honored at Outstanding Women Awards 2018
SCAN is thrilled to announce that Jeanine Harper, SCAN Executive Director, is being honored at the 2018 YWCA Outstanding Women Awards!
Now in its 38th year, the Outstanding Women Awards (OWA) is YWCA Richmond's signature women's empowerment event and one of the largest celebrations of women in leadership in our region. The 2018 OWA honorees will be formally recognized for their community impact at the Outstanding Women Awards Luncheon, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m.

SCAN Partners on Project to Serve Infants and Women with Substance Use Disorder
Women with substance use disorder (SUD) experience so many barriers to recovery. In the case of pregnant women with SUD, addiction threatens the lives of multiple ge
nerations, is associated with poor health outcomes for parents, and correlates with a higher risk of child neglect. While the life stage of pregnancy may bring joy and motivation, pregnancy may also trigger stress and feelings of shame when family, friends, and the community do not care about the 'why' of addiction. Very often, the 'why' hides in the shadow of childhood trauma - be it physical or sexual abuse, abandonment, neighborhood violence, systemic racism, or extreme poverty.
Partially funded by Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, SCAN is excited to partner with Family Lifeline and Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU on the Central Virginia Family Resiliency Project, which will wrap a trauma-informed team around approximately 30 pregnant women with substance use disorder, support them prenatally, give them the best chance at recovery, and set a foundation for the most protective, promotive relationship in a child's life - that between child and caregiver.
