Three ways to keep your New Year's
Resolution of finding a job

We're entering the second week of 2018 and promises of self-development, healthy eating, exercising and employment tops the list of New Year's Day resolutions. Chances of finding employment or a better paying job increased, according to a news release  by the Department of Labor.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Jim Acosta states the unemployment rate reached a seventeen-year low including drops in the unemployment rate for Hispanics and individuals without a high school diploma. If you don't fall into this worker group and finding employment tops your list of resolutions for the new year, stay encouraged.

Be positive.   Finding a job has its challenges. Self-defeating language (I'm too old. I don't have enough experience.) stifles your job search efforts. There's one way to ensure you don't get the job-you don't try.

Skill build.  If lack of experience or qualifications hamper your efforts, it may be time to assess your skill sets. Consider contacting an employment professional to help navigate your career path.

Make a plan.  Remember the old adage "To fail to plan is to plan to fail." Visit the Alabama Career Center and consult with an employment specialist. A variety of services are available under one roof at no cost job seekers and veterans. Learn about individual training scholarships, job search assistance, GED classes, seasonal worker transition services, job readiness classes and specialized job-related training and assistance for those with disabilities.

Additionally, resources for businesses and hiring managers seeking qualified workers are available through the On-the Job training program and access to prospective applicants through Alabama Joblink.
