Race-Based Trauma: The Missing Piece of the Trauma Conversation

Child welfare advocates, therapists, teachers, and others who work with children and families across the nation have engaged in the trauma informed care conversation for numerous years yet there has been a missing aspect of the conversation, race-based trauma. What prevents advocates from engaging in this aspect of the conversation? What is race-based trauma? Can we effectively engage families if we are not prepared to deal with the whole person? This workshop will lead participants in a discussion about race-based trauma, the impact on family engagement, and the importance of acknowledging this often ignored type of trauma.

2017 Organizational Readiness Survey
February 1, 2018

The purpose of the Trauma-Informed Organizational Readiness Survey is to assess the continuum of trauma-informed care in the community. Whether your agency is trauma-informed, wants to be trauma-informed, or even if it is outside the mission of the work that is provided, your input is invaluable. This survey will assess your organization's trauma-informed care initiative for all of 2017.

In order to prepare to complete the survey, please select one person from your central Texas organization, agency, or school to complete the survey.

Be on the lookout for the survey to be sent next week on Thursday, February 1.

Recap: Building Bright Futures:  A Policy Summit on Supporting Healthy Moms, Babies, and Childhood Development

On December 6, 2017, Texans Care for Children hosted a daylong event, Building Bright Futures: A Policy Summit on Supporting Healthy Moms, Babies, and Childhood Development in Austin, Texas. The summit, sponsored by the St. David's Foundation, brought together nearly 100 health practitioners, early educators, policy leaders, philanthropists, business leaders, and other Texans who advocate for strong early childhood systems. Panelists and attendees explored emerging challenges and innovative, effecti
ve ways to support maternal health, postpartum care, infant health, and early childhood development.

The first panel of experts discussed how childhood trauma impacts children and communities. Panelists shared innovative trauma-informed practices that are being implement in child care programs and schools across Texas. Seanna Crosbie -- Director of Program & Trauma-Informed Services at Austin Child Guidance Center and Chair of Trauma-Informed Care Consortium of Central Texas (TICC) -- offered insights and lessons learned from ACGC's Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Project (IEC). Through this project, ACGC uses the Second Step Program to promote the social and emotional health of children in order to build resiliency and they educate and provide guidance to childcare staff and parents on infant and childhood development.

The Task Force, will work over the next 9 months to develop its recommendations.

Introducing the Practice of Self-Compassion to Children
Gabi Garcia, LPC
In today's hypercompetitive achievement oriented world, children often internalize the message that their worth is attached to their accomplishments and that messing up or falling short is something to be ashamed of, rather than simply a normal part of life. This can lead to critical self-talk, and to children thinking they are not good enough.

I was inspired to write Listening with My Heart because I have experienced firsthand the gift of self-compassion, because as a counselor working in the schools I see the pressures that children are under and their struggles with issues around self-worth, and because I saw that self-compassion was often missing from what we teach children. I believe giving children tools to help them learn to be friends to themselves is vital. It is my hope that Listening with My Heart can be a part of that process and that self-compassion, like mindfulness, will become a practice that we teach our children at home, school and our therapy offices.
