A Message from the Head of School:

Dear CES Families,

There are three important announcements that I want to draw your attention to.

First, I am so excited that we are, once again, a Bethesda Magazine, Best of Bethesda Top Vote Getter! In this year's competition, Christ Episcopal School was recognized in three areas:
  1. Best Private Schools Grades K-8
  2. Best Private School/Religious Affiliation
  3. Best Preschool/Daycare
Thank you to all who took the time to vote in the Readers' Poll. We believe that this program is a great way for us to get the word out about CES. Endorsements from current parents and former parents, who know and understand the unique qualities and strengths of CES, are always the best. Thank you!

2. Please join CES and Christ Church for Episcopal School Sunday on Sunday, January 21 at 9:00am. This will be the last Episcopal School Sunday that we will share with Fr. McDuffie because he retires this month. In honor of him, we would like for as many CES students and their parents to be present as possible. The K-8 students who are present for the service will sing All Things Bright and Beautiful during the offertory. They all know the arrangement, and in order for it to sound its best, we need a large group of students to be part of the group. I hope you will join us and show Fr. McDuffie how much he has meant to us during his 19 years of service at Christ Episcopal. Students should wear their formal uniforms.

3. Gala update: Over the past several years, each grade-level class has been responsible for creating a basket to be auctioned off during the silent auction portion of the evening. Included in the annual fees that every family pays, is an amount for PA and class activities. From this money, each class has received $150 in order to create a class basket for the Gala. This year, the auctioneer with whom we work, Sherry Trular, has recommended that we no longer do the class baskets for the Gala. Based on her observations over the past three years, the baskets no longer seem as popular as they were in the past. Her suggestion is that the parent community donate one, large item to the auction. Because many classes have created the baskets without using the $150 designated for them, and instead used the money to do additional activities for their class, we did not think it made sense to deduct $150 from each class budget. Therefore, the recommendation is that we designate one gift from the parent community at a value of about $400 that would provide for a fun experience for an entire class. The $400 will come from the money that has been used to create the class baskets in the past. Since this is significantly less than the $150/class that has been distributed for the baskets, the remainder of the money will be distributed evenly among all of the classes so that each class can afford to do something extra for their class... extra field trip, special class activity... whatever your class decides it would like to do. Class budgets, with this update, will be provided to Homeroom Parents. However, if anyone has any questions, please let me know.

With love and gratitude,

Caroline Chapin, Ed.D.

WE DID IT AGAIN!

Middle School Chromebook Loans

Now that our one-to-one laptop program is established in the middle school, and the CES academic program grows more reliant on students having access to a Chromebook to participate in daily classroom assignments, we find it necessary to establish a protocol for students borrowing Chromebooks from the school.

To-date, we have been providing a device from the Lower School Chromebook cart to middle school students whose Chromebook is out for repair. The result has been that lower school students do not always have the kind of access to the Chromebooks that we would like for them to have. We would like to continue to provide this service, but the "loaning" time needs to be as limited as possible. We realized that we needed to provide greater clarity and articulate parameters around the borrowing of a CES Chromebook. To ensure fair and easy access to Chromebooks,
  • CES HIGHLY recommends that parents purchase the three-year, full warranty for the Chromebook at the time of purchase. This warranty covers all repair issues, including those associated with physical damage to the Chromebook if it is dropped or stepped on.
  • It is vital that students promptly communicate to teachers any Chromebook issues they are experiencing.
  • Once the issue has been identified, and if it warrants the Chromebook being sent for repair or replacement, a student may borrow a CES Chromebook for two weeks. During this time, the student's Chromebook should be replaced or repaired.
  • At the end of two weeks, the student will return the borrowed, CES Chromebook back to the school so that it may become available to the Lower School students once again.
  • If the manufacturer completing the repair, or providing a new Chromebook, indicates that the process will take longer than two weeks, the student should provide this information to the advisor AND the CES Technology Integration Specialist, Mrs. Vredenburg.
If you are experiencing any issues with your Chromebook, please email me and your student's advisory teacher. I am happy to give it a quick look-over as a courtesy and report back any findings.

Most physical issues are covered under warranty. If you purchased the 3 year service plan from CDWG, please see the link below entitls "How to File a Claim" that will help walk you through the claims process. Our representative is Chris Hegan (chriheg@cdw.com) if you need help. Otherwise, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your Chromebook to determine if the damage falls under their limited warranty.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!
Caitlin Vredenburg
