Fun Fact:
Felices Pascuas?
|
|
In the Spanish language, the word "pascua" literally means "passover". It is customary for people to wish one another "felices pascuas" (happy passover) at Easter.
However, that is also the customary greeting at Christmas!! What gives?
Basically, in the Spanish-speaking world, "pascua" has come to mean "religious holiday". Could be Easter, could be Christmas - I have even heard it used at Pentecost!
While there is some great theology to be uncovered in the blending of Easter and Christmas, still... it takes some getting used to, to say "Happy Easter" at Christmas.

Prayers & Praise
We thank you for your prayer support! Mission work is first and foremost a ministry of prayer.
* Thank God for the chance to travel to the USA for a wedding, the GLO meeting, and family time.
Pray for God's blessing on Luke, and his new wife, Joan.
* Pray for the Vilches family as their father, Jose, was recently diagnosed with bone cancer.
* Pray for the Lord to direct Ben as he raises support to begin mission work in Zacapa, Guatemala.
* Give thanks for 2 new grandchildren expected in 2018! Ask God to be with both Soni & Gabi in their pregnancies.
* Pray for persistence and success for Nika as she continues her studies to become a chiropractor.
* We pray for the many immigrants who are arriving to Chile and ask God to guide our efforts to serve them and to develop another Lutheran congregation in the city.

"I was a stranger and you invited me in..."
(Matt. 25:35)
Jesus the Immigrant?
Did you ever think of Jesus as an immigrant? I usually don't think of Him that way, but is it so far-fetched? After all, Christmas is the story of God leaving His home to "come and dwell among us" (Jn. 1:14). A LOT of people from many nations are leaving their homes to come and "dwell" in Chile. We pray that this Christmas, they would also find the One who left His home to dwell with us, live with us, die for us, and bring us to our true home in eternity!

Our new house is home to many!
|
We are very thankful to be blessed with a spacious, old home in a beautiful section of Santiago. It is the perfect place to host immigrants, visitors, and family. See who God has brought to share our house...
The Ventura Family
Pastor Adrian was a teenager in Jim's Bible class when we first moved to Venezuela (1989). He married a girl from the youth group and later studied to become a pastor. Many years later, they began to pray about where God may want them to serve (with their 3 young-adult children)...OUTSIDE of Venezuela. Two factors - the current situation in their country and schleroderma, a degenerative disease their oldest daughter has, caused them to consider leaving their home. When the Lutheran Church of Chile heard about this, they invited Pastor Adrian to serve as a missionary. Through GLO the family is in the process of raising funds for their future ministry in Constitucion, Chile. The Venturas are living in our home while they raise their financial and prayer support, whilst having access to medical resources for daughter Adrianny. They are an asset to us here in "Mission Providencia", but we hope that soon they will have enough funds so they can move on to the ministry awaiting them in Constitucion. Please pray for this process and consider being one of their supporters. You can find out more about them
HERE.

Domenico and Corali helping in the kitchen |
Nearly every Sunday more Venezuelans visit our church! God seems to be showing us that outreach to immigrants is important. For example, Domenico and Corali are two young Venezuelans who recently arrived in Santiago with plans to find jobs, get married and start new lives. The travelling and moving process was complicated and traumatic. They have found both spiritual and physical support here at our mission. We are happy to provide a place for them to live as they get situated. In turn, they participate in activities and invite their friends to church. Soon, they will move on and we will be able to host other immigrants.
Soni and Ty
This Thanksgiving we were grateful to have Soni & Ty share a turkey with us! Even though they only had one week to spend here, it was wonderful to show them Chile and the mission work. Their presence really made this house feel like home!

Luther movie - great success!
|
In our last newsletter we mentioned that one of our activities in honor of the 500
th
anniversary of the Reformation was to show the movie "Luther" at a public venue. The municipality where we live graciously allowed us to use a conference room in the middle of town. We had more than 40 people attend - the majority of them absolutely new contacts! We were also able to give away free books explaining more about the Lutheran Reformation. Please pray for the follow-up of several individuals who did express interest in visiting our church. Also pray that we would discover similar types of events to do as evangelistic outreach.
