Hey Thrivent Members!
Choice Dollars charitable grant funds make a world of difference to missionaries through our
Global Missionary Fund , which supplies dollars to missionaries who experience a shortfall in funding.
Directing Choice Dollars is easy. Simply go to:
Thrivent.com/thriventchoice to learn more and find program terms and conditions. Or call 800-847-4836 and say "Thrivent Choice" after the prompt.
Fun Fact:
The tallest building in Latin America is in Santiago...
Costanera Center
...and you can see it from our bedroom window! The Costanera Center is about 1000 feet tall, and has a 360 degree observation area at the top. We live withing walking distance of the tower (that is, if you are up to walking about a mile!). Right now, it is lit up with the color green at night. If you want to see more fotos of it, you can click here.

Prayers & Praise
* Pray for our next evangelistic event which is the "Luther" film.  The municipality where we live  has agreed to let us show this excellent movie in one of their facilities in celebration of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation.  Pray that new individuals come with whom we can share the Gospel.
Praise God for all the immigrants he is sending our way!  Pray that they will use this time of "starting over" in a new country to make their faith a priority.  Pray that the Lord would use us to serve them!
Thank the Lord for the arrival of the Ventura family.  We ask that God would provide the right people to commit to financially supporting their ministry.  We commend the health of their daughter, Adrianny, to God's divine mercy and care.
 *  We thank God for watching over our children (and grandchildren) in the United States.  We especially ask Him to guide Ben in his support discovery as he is preparing to serve as a missionary in Guatemala.
Pray for the various individuals that have been touched by God's Word through a variety of unique  events...handbell and vocal concerts highlighting the lyrics and melodies of the Reformation...and a "debate" at one of our schools where Jim guided the discussion on the existence of God!
 *  Join us in thanking God for the many opportunities He gives us to shine the Light of Jesus' love...at our rehab center, Casa Betesda...in our 2 Lutheran schools in Chile...at our 2 growing missions in Santiago.  Pray that God would guide us in using our time, treasures and talents according to His will.
 * Pray for the upcoming annual face-to-face meeting of the GLO Board of Directors, to be held November 15-16 in Miramar, Florida. Ask God to give us both WISDOM and BOLDNESS in His mission.
 * Pray for Luke (Liisa's brother) and Joan, who will be married on October 28th. Pray for us as we travel to the States for the wedding and the GLO board meeting following.

Ahhh, Spring is in the air... POR FIN! (Finally!). Hence, the Spring-like colors of our newsletter. It has been a long winter here in Chile, and although Spring "officially" started in September, we are only now starting to feel some warmer temperatures.
It always amazes me how a warm, sunny day can improve your mood. The things in your life that only yesterday seemed overwhelming or oppressive suddenly, under the warmth of the sun, become less overwhelming, less oppressive, or even downright unimportant.
This is the lesson that the new participants in our mission in Santiago are learning - except it's not the sun that changes our perspective, but the Son. Jesus changes lives, and that's the truth. Pray for our mission in the Providencia neighborhood of Santiago, that many, many more people will come out of the darkness of a life without Christ, and into the light of the Son!
Our New Mission Update!
Since the beginning of September, we have had regular Sunday services at our new location in the Providencia neighborhood of Santiago. The ministry continues to attract immigrants, nearly all Venezuelans.
Last Sunday worship with 23 in attendance
The "relaxed" atmosphere allows for more teaching than at a  typical ser vi ce.  Jim has been explaining a new part of the liturgy each Sunday.  His sermons are more Bible study oriented with opportunity  for interaction.  Although we do have "veteran" Lutherans involved in planting this new congregation,  the new visitors seem to appreciate the opportunity to learn about Lutheran worship and beliefs.  Attendance varies from 12 - 15 people.  Unfortunately, each Sunday there are different people!  Pray that we can get some consistency!
On
Jim presents Bible to confirmands Moises and Elianeth. Shirt-sleeve weather!
Sunday, October 15, we celebrated the first confirmation at the new mission! Give thanks to the Lord for Moises and Elianeth. Moises is new to the faith, while Elianeth was confirmed as a youth in Venezuela (by Jim!) but later drifted away. We praise God that He has led them both back to Jesus!

Evangelizing through workshops!
In the 2 months since we started our new mission in the center of Santiago, we have hosted 2 workshops.  In August the title was  "Adapting to My New Life in Chile".  This topic is very important for the many immigrants arriving to Santiago. Every one of the 15 people in attendance was Venezuelan!  From that event we have about 5 individuals who have started coming to our Sunday worship.
In September we gave a joint workshop on "Secrets to a Happy Marriage".  There was a smaller turnout, but we got positive feedback regarding the insights we shared from our 33 years of marriage!  Since we were able to "live-stream" the presentation, several people watched it from other locations - and even other countries!
Our October outreach event is a public showing of the film, "Luther" (in spanish, of course!). We got permission to use a government-owned facility in our Providencia neighborhood! PRAY that our publicity reaches the people that God wants to reach, and for the event itself on October 24th.
Update: "Casa Betesda" Rehab Center
In our last newsletter we asked for prayers for the opening of the rehabilitation center for handicapped young adults at our church in "La Florida" neighborhood of Santiago. Well, it has become a reality!
Sergio with three of the professional staff at Casa Betesda
Currently working at the center we have a special education teacher and her assistant as well as 2 part-time therapists - a kinesiologist and a speech therapist. Liisa and another woman from the church and I will be involved as volunteer music and art therapists, though we have not begun our sessions yet.  The center is taking one step at a time as we get all the details in place.  Currently we have 2 full-time clients who attend from 8 am - 1 pm.  There are also 3 individuals who receive a few hours of specialized therapy at during the week. Pray for the upcoming interviews and evaluations of two more clients.  Lord willing, we will soon be able to reach more families who have special challenges with the love of Jesus.
From Everywhere to Everywhere!
That's the byline of Global Lutheran Outreach (GLO), as we seek to facilitate the sending of missionaries from any country of the world, to any other country! God has blessed the mission and vision of GLO, and Jim still continues in his role as the Director of the organization. He has an office here in Santiago, and divides his time between GLO duties and the church planting ministry we are doing here. We are excited by what God is doing, and want to share with you some of the latest GLO missionary action! To learn more about each missionary, click the link on their name. Please pray for:
  • Chloe Villagomez, currently in language school in Guatemala. She will serve in Amatitlan, Guatemala.
  • Amber and Austin Reed, deploying for language school in Tanzania on October 19th. They will serve at an orphanage for people with albinism (albino) in Shinyanga, Tanzania.
  • Aaron Farrow, currently raising support in the US. He will serve in Valparaiso, Chile.
  • Ben Tino, currently raising support in the US. He will serve in Zacapa, Guatemala.
  • Rev. Adrian and Cruz Maria Ventura and family (from Venezuela), currently raising support in Chile. They will serve in Constitucion, Chile.
  • Lumembo and Kalangu Tshiswaka (natives of the Congo, living in Toronto, Canada), currently raising support to serve as a seminary professor in Ethiopia.

We praise God for each of you,  our "mission partners". We are off and running with our new church planting ministry. As the congregation grows, they will be able to assume more of the expenses, but for now, the ministry is largely dependent on us (all of us together!).
