Medical Fact
 "I didn't know that!

Charles Richard Drew (June 3, 1904 - April 1, 1950) was an American physician, surgeon, and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions , developing improved techniques for blood  storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks  early in World War II.

Happy 2018!
"New Year, a fresh new start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change."

The Better Mammogram mammo
A recent article OB/GYN News presents expert analysis from NAMS on 3D mammography:

Is it time to think about "the better mammogram" as the new standard of care? Can nuclear medicine provide a cost-effective workaround for imaging of women with dense breasts?

According to two leading breast imaging researchers,  it may be time to revisit current screening practices to take best advantage of today's imaging technology.

"Digital breast tomosynthesis is the new kid on the block for screening," said  Emily F. Conant, MD, professor of radiology and chief of breast imaging at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. "It's becoming the new standard of care in mammography," she said, speaking during a plenary session at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society.

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) can involve simultaneous acquisition of a conventional 2D mammogram along with a series of images to create a 3D image. Another protocol, which delivers a lower radiation dose, produces a "synthetic" 2D reconstruction of 3D mammography.*
A cancer is not detected in 2D, but is detected with 3D

In either case, tomosynthesis, said Dr. Conant, is "a digital reformatting of data" that allows the radiologist to "open the book" of the 2D image to flip through the pages, seeing the 1-mm slices that are the final tomosynthesis product.

In addition to making visible tumors that otherwise might be obscured by the overlay of dense breast tissue, DBT can help reduce the recall rate, with the 3D images providing immediate clarification at the initial appointment. Studies show that the recall rate can go down by up to 31%, Dr. Conant said.

Other recent data show that DBT has promise to improve detection rates in a population of great interest - younger women, where there are often too many false positives and not enough cancers found, Dr. Conant said. If the risk-benefit ratio for DBT continues to play out as the data pile up, "I would strongly suggest that we should be doing screening in the 40s," she said.

A Diet Strategy That Counts Time, Not Caloriestime
A recent artcile published in The Wall Street Journal, A Diet
Strategy  That Counts Time, Not Calories, claims you can "eat whatever you want with time-restricted feeding, just not whenever you want. The weight-loss regime limits eating to a 12-hour window each day and is good for diabetes prevention, longevity and blood pressure "

The article reads:

Stop counting calories. It's the clock that counts.
That's the concept behind time-restricted feeding, or TRF, a strategy increasingly being studied by researchers as a tool for weight-loss, diabetes prevention and even longevity.

In TRF, you can eat whatever you want and as much as you want-just not whenever you want. Daily food intake should be limited to a 12-hour window, and ideally cut down to eight to 10 hours. But you can pick the hours you want to eat. (Note: This doesn't mean you should stuff your face with cupcakes. Experts say you should dine as you normally would. Only noncaloric drinks like water and black coffee are allowed during fasting hours.)

Despite a lack of dietary restrictions, most people following TRF end up consuming fewer calories and lose weight, according to studies and experts. Preliminary evidence also shows other health benefits of fasting for 12 hours or more, including lower blood pressure and improved glucose levels, and physiological changes linked to slowing the aging process. Researchers believe that when the body kicks into fasting-mode it more efficiently breaks down food and fat, in particular.

Healthy Living: Folate Through Foodfolate
A new report from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that "all women who were planning or capable of pregnancy should get at least 0.4 mg of folate - the B vitamin that can prevent certain birth defects." Timing is crucial since its most beneficial to between one month pre-conception through the first trimester. You can get your daily fix through food.

National Blood Donor Month blood
January is National Blood Donor Month.

As a former board member of Summit's Colonial Crossings Red Cross, Dr. Rubino is a big supporter of donating blood to help support those in need, especially during times of emergency. Blood donations are currently in urgent demand.

Facts about blood needs:
  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
  • Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.
  • The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
  • It is estimated that sickle cell disease affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the U.S. About 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year. Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.69 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2017. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
What a great way to start the new year by donating blood and helping make a big differnce in the lives of others. To find out where to donate in your local area, click here.
