FROM THE RECTOR
Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 28th
Dear All Saints' 'Ohana,

Every year, I make the same desperate plea to the congregation to attend the Annual Meeting of the Parish. And every year, we have roughly about the same number of people who attend the meeting.

I have thought about giving away door prizes. Would people be more likely to show up if they knew they could win a free weekend at the Hyatt Poipu or a dinner for two at Kintaro?

We might get a few more attendees, but in the end, door prizes and other promotions undermine the importance and integrity of the meeting. Members of the congregation should show up at the Annual Meeting because they care about the future of the Church.

Why is the Annual Meeting important? The Annual Meeting of the Parish is important to the mission, vision, and ministries of All Saints'. During the annual meeting, we elect new Vestry members and delegates to the Diocese's Convention. Also, leaders of the congregation make brief presentation, we review the finances of the Church, and the Rector offers his annual address to the congregation.

This year, there is an added importance to the Annual Meeting due to my upcoming sabbatical. During the meeting, we will begin to highlight the vital work and discernment that will take place before, during, and after the sabbatical time.

On Sunday, January 28th, we will gather at 8:00AM for our Annual Meeting. The morning will begin with a breakfast potluck. The theme of the meeting is "Reflect, Renew, Reaffirm." Please plan to attend the meeting--your participation would be a great blessing!

SPIRITUAL FORMATION AND EDUCATION
Lenten Series
How can we best live out the Summary of the Law from our Holy Scriptures? Please join us for a facilitated Lenten learning series which will explore how we as faithful Christians can best be in relationship with our God and our neighbors.

We’ll begin our study by exploring our personal spiritual autography and assessing our relationship with God. We’ll learn about different spiritual practices and set personal goals. Then we’ll explore our behaviors as they relate to the first four commandments of loving God. Followed by exploring commandments 5-10 loving our neighbors.

Once we have a better understanding as individuals on how to personally improve our behaviors in these areas, we’ll extend our group dialog to the All Saints ‘ohana and then end the series in a group dialog about how to best live this out as global citizens.

Session One

THIS WEEK IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
January 28: Jesus Heals the Sick
John 4-5. Back in Cana, Jesus meets a royal official whose son is near death. At the man’s pleading, Jesus promises that the boy will live, without even seeing him. “The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.” Later the father finds that his son did begin to recover from illness at the very moment that Jesus promised life.

Then Jesus heals a man at the pool at Bethesda, where the man was hoping to be healed by the curative waters. Problems begin to develop as Jesus healed on the Sabbath, and the man reported the healing to “the Jews,” meaning the Judean authorities.

The last sentence in this story is key: “For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.”
