Major Highlight - Arabic
Arabic is the 5th most spoken language in the world. It is one of six official U.N. languages and the U.S. Department of State considers Arabic a critical language. It is the official language of 26 countries and the first language of nearly 300 million people. Arabic is the language of scripture and prayer for more than a billion people and it was the most widespread language of science and philosophy for a millennium. Students first learn the Arabic alphabet and soon begin learning basic patterns of speech and grammar. While the program emphasizes Modern Standard Arabic, students can also study Levantine spoken Arabic and Classical Arabic. Graduates of the program can converse in Arabic and read both classical and modern texts, from the Qur'an to modern literature, newspapers, and internet sites. The Arabic major includes advanced courses on literature and culture conducted entirely in Arabic and literature and culture courses in English translation, which are open to all majors. Graduates may pursue careers in education, government, international trade, banking, print or electronic media, or tourism. Career Corner - Summer Internship & Opportunity Fair - January 23
Summer is a great time to participate in an internship, volunteer, or partake in other kinds of resume-building experiences. If you are looking for such an opportunity, you'll want to attend the January 23rd
Summer Internship & Opportunity Fair to meet with representatives from dozens of companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Make sure to research participating organizations before the fair. If the organizations that interest you have posted their opportunities in FutureLink (many of them have!), you are strongly encouraged to apply online before speaking with representatives. Doing so will convey that you are genuinely interested in the organization. You will also be regarded as a serious applicant during the fair, if you give the representative(s) a copy of your resume while describing why you think you are qualified for their position(s). Consider using the resources and services listed below to get your resume ready for the event. After the fair, be sure to follow-up with organizations you spoke with. Send them a thank you note or complete any tasks they may have asked you to complete, such as completing an online application. F

Dean's Student Advisory Board - Apply for a Position

One representative will be selected from each of the three college divisions: Arts and Humanities, Natural and Mathematical Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences. A Night at the Columbus Museum of Art
Student Life Residence Life is hosting "A Night at the Columbus Museum of Art." The museum will be open for all Ohio State students, staff, faculty and family members/friends. Free parking is available at the museum and a continuous shuttle service will be provided starting at 5:45 p.m. until the end of the event (with stops at the Ohio Union, Blackburn House and Drake Union).

Arts and Sciences Merit and Need-Based Scholarships
Merit and need-based funding is available for currently enrolled students pursuing a major in the humanities and/or the natural and mathematical sciences. Funds will be applied toward 2018 - 2019 enrollment. Eligibility information and the online application are located

Aida Cannarsa Snow Endowment Fund Scholarship
This fund provides need-based scholarships to students who plan to pursue a career in publishing or publication. In order to be eligible, applicants must have a current FAFSA on file with Student Financial Aid. Funds will be applied toward 2018 - 2019 enrollment. Online application.

Study Abroad Program Highlight
Mapping Our World - Southern Scandinavia
This program combines online coursework in the art and science of map making with a two-week immersive field-study experience at Lund University, Sweden. The overarching goal is to promote spatial data literacy. Students will engage in geographic fieldwork and data collection exercises, attend lectures by local experts, and tour significant places, historical sites and museums. Students will be housed in dormitories at Lund University. Students from all majors are welcome to apply. Course credit can be used toward the GE Data Analysis category.

2018 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum
The Denman Undergraduate Research Forum provides an opportunity for undergraduates to showcase their research projects and creative works with the University community. PLEASE NOTE: There are important changes to the 2018 Denman forum. When submitting an application to present, students will be able to choose between an oral (podium) or poster presentation. There will be three presentation sessions throughout the day. Students will identify their preferred time slot when they apply and will be assigned a time slot on a first-come, first served basis. Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at Ohio State
The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at Ohio State is designed to help historically underrepresented students explore opportunities for graduate study and academic careers. Over the course of eight weeks during the summer, Ohio State SROP participants will conduct research with a faculty mentor on a topic of mutual interest, and participate in activities crucial to preparation for graduate school, including workshops on research skills, seminars on topics related to graduate education, and professional development events. At the end of the summer program, participants present their research at a campus summary conference and a regional conference. Read more.

Summer Research Initiative to Increase Diversity
University of Maryland College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
This program provides rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to increase their interest in research careers in the social and behavioral sciences, develop research skills, and learn about doctoral training with the goal of encouraging students to pursue doctoral degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program has a special emphasis on population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders).

2018 Classes at Ohio State's Stone Lab
Stone Lab is accepting applications for 2018 classes and workshops. Students can earn two college credits in one week or four credits in five weeks in summer science classes on subjects such as aquatic biology, behavioral ecology and field zoology. Introductory courses are open to undergraduates in any major, while upper-level courses are ideal for science majors looking for practical experience.

Spring 2018 BOSS Competition
Do you have an idea for a business, service, or product that you want to get off the ground? If so, the Best of Student Startups (BOSS) competition is a great first step! Through a series of interactive workshops, students will be provided valuable information and coaching to make their business ideas a reality. At the end of the program, five teams will be selected to pitch their ideas at the BOSS Finale. The winning team will be awarded funding toward the development of their idea! Read more.

The English Department's Lord Denney's Players are holding auditions for Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor Wednesday (1/10) to Friday (1/12) from 3 - 6 p.m. in Room 311, Denney Hall.
