Scripture Lessons: 1 Corinthians 8: 1-13        Mark 1: 21-28
Sermon: Power Plays

           Immediately following the calling of Peter, Andrew, James, and John, the Gospel According to Mark tells us that Jesus visited Capernaum where he and his disciples encountered a man with an unclean spirit.  The crowds were amazed at Jesus' teaching and his authority; even his authority to cast out the unclean spirit.  The people began to see the power of Jesus on display and were trying to piece together what it meant about who he was.
            As followers of Jesus we are called to use our power in ways that are consistent with the gospel message.  The church in Corinth wrestled with this in a variety of ways.  How could they be the community God wanted them to be if they were abusing their power, their influence, and their knowledge?  We could ask the same questions of our own churches in the 21st century. Do we let the power of love rule our actions and decisions?  Are there any unclean spirits that need to be cast from us in order for us to be the community God has called us to be?

The Geneva Choir will sing Bound for the Kingdom at the 8:30 service.

The Chancel Choir will sing All You Works of the Lord, Bless the Lord at the 11:00 service.

Prayer at the Close of Day

Prayer at the Close of Day , January 28 at 7:30 in Lingle Chapel. Worship, reflect, pray, center, sing, refresh, renew.  Music is led by singers and instrumentalists from DCPC and Davidson United Methodist churches, in the style of Taizé and Compline. Congregational sung prayers, chant based choral singing, and beautiful short anthems invite you to repair your soul.

Walking with Hagar into the Wilderness

Wednesday, February 7, 7:00 pm, Congregation House. Come and join Davidson College Senior, Julia Burkley, in a workshop on racial language in biblical interpretations using Genesis 16: the story of Hagar and Sarah. Walk with her through this story from various historical and modern perspectives, and see how this story has been racialized in modern times. In the end, we will question how our modern church continues this racial language and raise questions about privilege and power.

February 12 at 7:30. Our guest recitalist is Elizabeth Lenti, Director of Music and Organist at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte and Artistic Director of The Choir School at St. Peter's. Spring and Summer Mission Trips

Spring Break Mission Trip-April 2-6  We are organizing a team of adults and youth (age 14+) to support the ongoing flood relief efforts in South Carolina.  We will work through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and will stay at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC.  If you would like more information please contact Holly Moton at 704-604-8426 or [email protected] .  We hope to have our team firmed up by the end of February.

DCPC Red Cross Blood Drive

Red Cross Blood Drive  is Monday, February 5 . 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Congregation House.
Volunteers are needed:
  •  Pre-register donors following Sunday worship services on January 28 and February 4th 
  •  Register donors as they check in for their donation
  •  Provide refreshments to serve our donors
  •  Provide hospitality by serving food and visiting with donors following donation
  •  Assist the Red Cross Team with set-up and clean-up
