Huskies Charging Forward with STEM

Are you up on the educational jargon: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)?
"Our Vision, The Next Ten Years," the board's strategic plan for RHP and Ren's future, includes a particular focus on us becoming nothing short of a STEM powerhouse, and we are already up and running in those areas this year. We have introduced Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles to the upper school, added a Specialized Math/Science Diploma, and are offering a for-credit summer Biology class for those who want to accelerate their progress in STEM. Already we are the only school locally that requires all students to take physics, and our senior robotics elective is entering its 15 year.

Last weekend, three middle school teams, one for each grade, entered the Future Cities competition and came home with major winning hardware. The competition requires students to use computer programming alongside their own innovative thinking to design a futuristic city that meets the needs of a diverse population. This year, an additional focus was conceptualizing the best "Age-Friendly" city that considers the various needs of people at different stages of life.

And we also got news last week that the school's Literary Magazine, not for the first time, was named one of the top publications in the country by the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). Top-notch writing and art for sure, but technical design and computer skills are increasingly part of the production of these magazines: a classic example of where STEM meets the liberal and fine arts.

Huge kudos to our students, to our teachers/advisors, and to the parent mentors who spearheaded this year's efforts.

Other initiatives include the development of a summer internship program in STEM, a game design course, and the incorporation of technology and multidisciplinary approaches in regular coursework. Over the past two terms, several teachers have utilized the two 3D printers we have on campus to accomplish projects ranging from the fields of science to English. There are many other STEM initiatives currently in development that we look forward to sharing in the near future.

The board is planning a physical space dedicated to STEM and Innovation, and teachers in all subjects are increasingly looking for ways to incorporate these themes into curriculum. Watch for us to become the South Bay's STEM powerhouse!

Congratulations to Middle School
Future Cities Participants!

Awesome news from one of our STEM challenges in middle school! Last Saturday, three middle school teams from RHP and REN travelled to San Diego to compete in the Southern California Future City competition.

There were 28 teams in the Southern California region and our 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams did an awesome job. Our 7th grade team were finalists, placing 4th overall and our 6th team won a special award for best 'age friendly city'. Two fantastic achievements.

So, what is Future City? Students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future. This year, they had to identify an issue that senior citizens have and engineer three innovative solutions, so they can remain active and independent. Students worked with their team to complete a project plan that helped them stay organized, focused, and on schedule. They designed a virtual city using SimCity software, this simulated design experience taught the students city planning skills, budgeting, helped them see the consequences of their decisions, and gave them a chance to explore various layouts and designs for their future city. They wrote a 1,500-word essay describing the unique attributes of their city and their solution to this year's challenge. They then built a scale model of a section of their city using recycled materials and included at least one moving part all with a budget of less than $100.

Once in San Diego, they had to give a 7-minute presentation discussing features of their future city and their solution to the citywide challenge and answer lots of questions from various judging panels.

Some very happy middle schoolers and it didn't stop there... on the bus home they were discussing how to produce a winning project for next year. Go Huskies!

It won't be 100% without you

Our 100 day campaign to achieve 100% participation was an enormous success, but there are still families who have not yet made a gift or pledge. If you are one of these families, we encourage you to participate now.

The Husky Fund helps us to retain an exceptional and dedicated faculty; provides for small class sizes; helps fund continual enhancements to our campus and technology; and provides tuition assistance to ensure the diversity of our community as we prepare our students not just for college, but for life beyond.

All donors will be recognized in our Annual Report. Custom payment plans are welcomed, and pledges must be paid by June 30.

To pledge now, please email Seth Bass at [email protected].

To review suggested giving levels and to donate now, click the button below, or send a check to the school.

We are most grateful for gifts of all sizes, and thank all the donors in our extended community for their partnership and support of our students.

Nicholas Blair

"I loved being in a class where I was urged to speak. They would give me good advice which I had never gotten from a teacher before. As ninth grade continued I didn't have to worry about my homework because I was genuinely having fun doing it and later going over it in class. They urged me to do my best and I tried."

Our annual Fathers' Breakfast was a huge success this past Wednesday. Special thanks to everyone who contributed clothing to Clothes The Deal and the 9th grade parents who organized the event!

Students took part in various activities and acts of kindness in order to honor the National Kindness Challenge and Kindness week.

9th Graders took a field trip to Olvera Street to see murals.

9th grade was also able to enjoy PE at the nearby park this week.
