Retreat helps juniors "unstuff"
This month, the juniors began their retreat experience. The first group went two weeks ago, and the second group returns this afternoon. This overnight retreat is held at Mt. St. Francis and helps the students grow in their faith in order to prepare them for times when they must make tough decisions and even ask difficult questions on their faith journey. The focus is on emptying themselves so that God can truly fill each person. The retreat includes prayer, witness talks, small group discussions, and community building. Read more.
Catholic Schools Week is next week
Next week, Providence will celebrate Catholic Schools Week along with all Catholic schools across the country. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed." Throughout the week, students will compete in the Penny War, with donations supporting the WHAS Crusade for Children. Each school day will also center around a theme, including:
  • Monday: Celebrating Your House. Students may wear their PHS-issued House T-shirt or spirit wear
  • Tuesday: Celebrating Your Parish. Students may wear a T-shirt representing their Deanery parish school or spirit wear
  • Wednesday: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and Volunteers. All school Mass
  • Thursday: Scholarship Spirit Wear Day
  • Friday: Celebrating Your School. Students may wear Spirit Wear
Student news: Homecoming, Bowling, Quick Recall
Bowling advances to semi-state
The Providence Bowling Club ended a very successful regular season on Jan. 3. In only the second year since the inception of the Southern Hills Bowling Conference, it has grown to incorporate seven area schools, including seven boys'/co-ed teams and three girls' teams. The Providence Boys' Bowling team finished with a regular season record of 8-2, which landed them in third place overall behind only Clarksville and Jeffersonville. The Providence Girls' Bowling team finished second among girls' teams with a 1-1 record among all girls' teams, and a 2-8 overall record.

Sophomores Christian Tate and Austin Grantz competed in a three-way roll-off at sectionals with junior Trey Miller to win their spots at regional competition this past weekend. At regional, Christian and Austin did not advance as individuals. The Boys' Bowling Team won the wild card spot to advance to this past Saturday's regional in Evansville, having scored just one pin short of the second place spot at sectional (and a guaranteed berth to regional). At regional, the team scored an average of 176 and earned second place and a spot at semi-state in Richmond on Saturday.

JV Quick Recall comes in 2nd

The Quick Recall teams ended their season this past weekend with the Jefferson County Non-Public Quick Recall League Tournament. Varsity defeated DeSales in the first round but fell to Trinity in the second round. The JV team was runner-up in the league tournament after defeating Assumption, Trinity, and Collegiate to make it to the final round against St X, where they fought hard but lost.

The JV team ended the regular season with a record of 5-5, including a great win over Trinity in the regular season. The team was the No. 6 seed in the tournament behind No. 1 St. X, No. 2 Collegiate, No. 3 Trinity, Kentucky Country Day, and St. Francis. Sophomores Michael Morra, Logan Applewhite, Nolan Banet, Jacob Sullivan, Stephen Wilson, Claire Reyes, Elle O'Bannon and Luke Rodski, and freshman Marcus Fuson competed. Other team members include sophomore Shelby Wright and freshmen Kieran Kelly, Monica Nokes, and Cai Celestin.
The varsity team ended its regular season with a record of 3-8 with wins over Assumption, Mercy, and Holy Cross. The team was seeded No. 9 in the tournament, and in play against No. 8 DeSales, the team recorded a big win in which DeSales scored only one point the entire second half. The team fell to No. 1 Trinity in the next round after leading for a good part of the first half. Players in the tournament were seniors: Kaleb Dunn, Adam Garcia, Jake Cole, and Nick Stapp, and juniors Adriel Nacpil and Ross Reyes. Other team members include seniors Andrew Bittenbender, Cody Gibbs, and Olivia Storz and juniors Ty Adams and Joe Gryboski.

Homecoming winners announced
We celebrated Winter Homecoming last Friday, with an assembly at the end of the school day and the queen crowning during halftime of the Boys Basketball vs. Henryville game that evening. Senior Brogan Welch was crowned king at the assembly, and senior Mary Claire Natalie received her crown at the game. Congratulations to the court and to the Winter Homecoming King and Queen.

Prepping for competition
The Amazing Global Marketplace team was able to practice for its upcoming competition at Bellarmine with in-school presentations to mimic the trade booth the members will work. The team split into two groups to demo a trade booth, which included handing out promotional gifts such as fidget spinners, flashlights, and chargers supplied by sponsor company Samtec.
Murphy Stadium bleacher replacement in progress
Thanks to our generous donors, construction of the replacement of the home-side bleachers in Murphy Stadium has started. The bleachers have been removed and will be recycled. Gravel and rock for the new base is being added.  In the coming months, new bleachers will be added, with  construction and installation to be completed this spring . Koetter Construction is coordinating the project with other services being provided by RKR Inc. and IMI.
STUDENT PROFILE
Senior earns Eagle Scout rank
Senior Nik Heiligenberg recently earned his Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. A member of Troop 4010 out of St. Anthony, he earned the rank in part by completing a project that included building a storage shed for the Haven House homeless shelter in Jeffersonville. Read more.

Teams prepare for sectional, national competition
Wrestling sectional on Saturday
The Wrestling team has fewer than 10 players but expects big results from postseason competition, which begins on Saturday at Jeffersonville High School. Despite low numbers and some injuries, the team has continued to get better all season.

"We had a tough start to begin the season with returning conference champion (sophomore) Chase Aldridge not having clearance due to an offseason injury and some key guys from last year not returning," Coach Randy Lynch said. "But this team buckled down and worked their tails off. We are definitely working with quality and not quantity this season, but no one has made any excuses, only progress, each and every day."

As the season progressed, the team made definite improvement. The wrestlers closed out their dual season with a 4-1 mark at the Providence Duals and followed that up with a fourth place finish at the Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference. Lone senior Jansen Tate made marked improvement this year and continues to lead by example with 15 wins and a third place finish at conference, Coach Lynch said.

However, leading the team this year have been two juniors: Nathan Grantz and Sam Hudlin, who each won his weight classes at conference and have 26 and 21 wins respectively on the season. Chase made his return at the conference championships with a third place finish along with freshmen Ryley Gunther (third) and Wilson Stemm (fifth).

"These are the results we want to see as we go into the state tournament," Coach Lynch said.

Going forward to the state tournament, Coach Lynch said he has high hopes of ending some empty streaks for the Pioneers.

"The last sectional champion we had was in 2015 - and it was the last year Providence had a semi-state qualifier," Coach Lynch said. "Last year we were close with three making it to regionals. This year I truly believe we have two or three wrestlers with strong chances to end both those droughts".

Cheerleaders to compete in Dallas
The Cheer Team will travel to Dallas this weekend to compete in the NCA Senior & Junior High School National Championship in the small intermediate varsity, medium time out cheer, and medium time out dance divisions. The team has been raising money and preparing all season for this event, and we wish them well.

Girls Swim & Dive sectional next weekend
The Girls Swim & Dive team will compete in sectional beginning Feb. 1 at Floyd Central against 16 other schools. The sectional finals, equivalent to regional and semi-state in other sports, will be held on Feb. 3. The team was grown in numbers and expects to advance in several events.
Middle School Softball team looking for players
Southern Indiana Catholic Athletics, in coordination with Coach Kenny Janes, is looking to form a girls' middle school softball team this spring. The team will compete against other middle school teams in the Southern Indiana area. Girls in seventh or eighth grade who attend a Deanery school or are a registered member of a Deanery parish are welcome to participate. Pre-registration needs to be complete by Feb. 12 to determine if there is enough interest to form the team. Registration fees will be based on how many girls register. Fall sports athletes earn postseason honors
The Courier Journal announced the remainder of its All-Area Team and Player of the Year nominees, and several Pioneer student-athletes were among them.

Senior Nick Boesing was nominated for the Boys Tennis Player of the Year Award and named to the Southern Indiana All-Area Team. Teammates junior Carson Carrico and senior Adam Starr also made the All-Area Team. Senior Marissa Hornung was nominated for the Volleyball Player of the Year Award and to the All-Area Team. Also named to the All Area Team: sophomore Courtney Glotzbach, juniors Lilly Bivens and Hanna Mitchell, and freshman Alli Hornung. Junior Austin Hughes was nominated for the Boys Soccer Player of the Year nominee and to the All-Area Team, as were teammates seniors Shane Hesse and Michael Gill, junior Isaac Coker, and freshman Luke Hesse. Girls Soccer Southern Indiana All-Area Team nominees were seniors Hanna Hanlon, Olivia Dome, junior Brigid Welch, and sophomores Lauren Lindquist and Avery Stumler.

Parent Notes: Deanery Night, registration, and more
Scholarship Spirit Wear Day
Friday, Jan. 26, will be a Scholarship Spirit Wear Day. Students who bring in $1 may wear spirit wear. Funds raised help students attend retreats, conferences, and other extracurricular events. Students will be notified when the application period for these scholarships is open. Spirit wear guidelines are listed in the Student/Parent Handbook.

Boys Basketball vs. New Albany expected to sell out
The Feb. 9 Boys Basketball vs. New Albany game is expected to be a sellout, and parents need to take note that Pioneer Passes, Mass Passes and season passes will not be honored at that game.

Spring Break weather make-up days
March 12-16 is reserved for weather make-up days, should Providence have to close for inclement weather and be unable to institute eLearning. The remaining week of Spring Break is March 19-23. Please also reserve May 4 for a weather make-up day, if needed.

Registration for 2018-2019 school year
This week, students are completing the registration process for next school year. Students should bring the parent-signed form to school, and parents should have completed the online registration via Skyward Family Access and paid the $100 registration fee.

Scholarships available to incoming freshmen
Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to apply for two scholarships. The Dale Durham Performing Arts Scholarship offers a $1,000 award to an incoming freshman interested in performing arts. Click here for the application. The deadline is March 9, 2018. 

The Providence Alumni Association Scholarship provides a free iPad to one or more incoming freshmen. The application will be available in the coming weeks.

Next Coffee with the Counselors
The next Coffee with the Counselors is Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 7:30-8:00 a.m. in the Fr. Mike Counseling Center. The topics will be Scholarships as well as Registering as an athlete with the NAIA or NCAA. Parents should sign in at the main office and proceed to the second floor.

FAFSA Workshop on Feb. 22
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid should be completed by every senior for the upcoming college school year of 2018-19 using taxes from 2016. This application for financial aid should be completed for each year a student is enrolled in college or graduate school. Providence will offer a free workshop, with Mrs. Emily Losey and the director of financial aid from Ivy Tech. The workshop will be held at Providence on Thursday, Feb. 22, in the Library from 3:15-6:00 p.m. Parents should bring their 2016 tax information and if arriving after 4:00 p.m., enter via the student entrance.
Deanery Night brings schools together
Last night, we celebrated Deanery Night at the Boys Basketball game vs. Silver Creek. Deanery students wearing their school T-shirt received free popcorn, and Deanery boys' basketball teams were recognized at halftime. Prior to Deanery Night, a Facebook contest asked participants to vote for the Best Deanery Mascot, and St. Anthony School received the most reactions. The St. Anthony Athletic Department received a $100 donation as the prize.

Reunion planning for 2018
  • 1968: Save the Date: 50th reunion will be Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018. The Golden Graduation Ceremony and Dinner will be Saturday, April 14, 2018, at PHS.
Alumni Night cancelled
Inclement weather on Jan. 12 led to the cancellation of the Boys Basketball game and the accompanying Alumni Night event. Due to time constraints and scheduling conflicts, the event could not be rescheduled for this season. The all-basketball alumni reunion will take place next year.

Ray Day '57 and Charlie Jenkins '57 will be signing copies of their book on the history of PHS basketball at the Girls Basketball home game tomorrow evening.

The annual Gala Dinner & Auction is an important fundraiser for Providence, and we couldn't do it without our alumni, parents, and friends.
