As part of our celebration of Black History Month, on Friday February 9 the entire school enjoyed a STEP performance organized by WHMS parents Katina Hutton and Turina Parker. The gathering opened with everyone singing Lift Every Voice together. Students were treated then to an introduction to STEP, a performance, and an opportunity to learn some moves!
A special thank you to all the parents who participated in and helped coordinate this wonderful event!

Book Displays for Black History Month
Displays have been up in both the school lobbies to showcase books written by black authors, as well as biographies of inspiring individuals. These books are part of the Woodland Hill library and can be checked out throughout the school year! We encourage students to continue to read books from a variety of viewpoints. Check out
1000 Black Girl Books as another resource for readers ranging from adult to emerging. These books all feature black girls as main characters.

Black History Month Musical Performance
The Diversity Committee organized a musical performance to celebrate Black History Month.
As part of the performance, the Upper Elementary and Middle School students performed songs of different genres, including hip hop, the blues, and jazz. The Glee Club performed a rendition of
Siyahamba, a South African song for Peace.

Valentines Day at WHMS
The students always enjoy celebrating Valentines day. Each level celebrates a little differently, with Primary exchanging valentines cards, Lower Elementary exchanging grab bags filled with Valentines treats, and Upper Elementary and Middle School celebrating with a Valentines lunch exchange.

Book Club
|
The WHMS book club is heading into their third book. The group, which has two meeting times to accommodate busy and changing schedules, has already discussed The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, and Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. This month, the group will read The Narrative of Sojourner Truth. The discussions will take place on March 26, one at 1:30 and the other at 3:15. All are welcome! |

Community Jam
Join us on Sunday, March 4 for Woodland Hill's Community Jam Open Mic Night at Troy Kitchen. The event will take place on the lounge side of Troy Kitchen. Beer and wine will be sold at the bar.

Iggy Calabria. Otherwise, enjoy the show from the comfort of the lounge! Last year, 50 people attended.
There is a $5 suggested donation that will benefit the WHMS Music Department.

International Favorites Cooking Workshop --
Travel to India

The cooking workshop that had been scheduled for February 11 has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 18.
This workshop is for adults only, and registrations are still welcome! The cost of the class is $40, and includes a wine pairing. You can sign up here. |

The Crucible
The Middle School students put on a production of
The Crucible on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10. The students worked hard to rehearse and stage this production for the WHMS community with the guidance and direction of Alisa Scapatici.

Lunar New Year
|
The school has been festively decorated to celebrate Lunar New Year. Erin and Jessa's class had a parade, and learned about celebrating Lunar New Year from parents Clara Chew and William Wan.

Upper Elementary Trips
The Upper Elementary students recently attended a performance of
The Giver at Sage Theater Institute. Throughout the month the students have been learning about world religions, and visiting different places of worship in small groups as part of their study. Each group is presenting what they've learned to the entire Upper Elementary. Pictured below is their visit to St. Peters Episcopal Church. They have also visited Tendai Buddhist Institute, a local Mosque, as well as Temple Israel, and have learned a lot in the process!
GCAP presentation
The eighth grade students had a presentation about their trip to GCAP (Global Citizens Action Project). GCAP is designed as a conference for Middle School students to hear from a variety of speakers on a variety of global issues. Our eighth graders always return from this trip feeling inspired about their role in affecting change in the world.
Learning about the 7 Years War

The Middle School students enjoyed
a presentation from Greg Rogers on the 7 Years War. Greg has a PhD in history and is an adjunct professor and tutor at SUNY Cobleskill. Greg also works in the Elementary after school program and subs at both Woodland Hill and other local schools.

Pinky the Reading Dog
|
Lower Elementary students were visited by two therapy dogs on February 9. Many of the students were able to read to the dogs, and others will have the change to read to them on their next visit. Reading with dogs is a tactic created to help struggling readers, but is great for readers of all ability levels. Children begin to associate reading with being with the dog, and begin to view reading in a positive way. |
Dinner at Umana
The Diversity Committee organized a community outing at Umana on February 15. There was a great crowd of people who came, with a good mix of staff and parents from all levels. We hope to arrange even more opportunities for members of our community to come together!
Creating Change

Molly Schmonsky, one of our Middle School students, has been working on an important community service project.
Molly is pictured here with Traffic engineer Bill Trudeau, Chief Robert Sears, and Community Resource Officer Brian Hawley after their meeting to discuss her initiative to install crosswalks on Hackett Blvd in Albany so that residents can access the bike path safely.
