Tuesday after school, students in Emporia High art classes were recognized for their submissions into the state-wide Scholastic art show.
Superintendent Kevin Case recognized the members of the Emporia Board of Education Wednesday evening as part of School Board Recognition Month.

Payroll Updates
The recent increase in salaries required a salary audit for the American Fidelity disability premiums. The new premiums will be effective February 1. Due to variances, all premium amounts should be correct by March 15 checks. 

The new federal withholding tax chart has been released. Employees may notice a change in their federal withholding taxes effective with their February 1 check.

Moments

The board recognized  Matthew Fowler, USD 253 Electronic Media Specialist , who received an award for the 2017 Kansas School Public Relations Association and Kansas Association of School Boards Publications Contest. Matt received an  Award of Excellence for the video entitled  Graduates: Walking in their shoes . The contest recognizes the top publications produced by Kansas school districts.


Wednesday evening, the Emporia High Student Council hosted members of the school board for dinner and an update of ongoing StuCo activities.

Thank you to the Hopkins Foundation for a donation in the amount of $11,923.65 for 2017-18 Hopkins Projects.

Thank you to Brody and Dana Peak for the donation of a basketball training machine for use with Emporia Middle School basketball programs.

Thank you to the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund for a $1,000 grant to Walnut Elementary for Robotics items to increase computer science skills for K-5 students.

Other Board Business

Lease Vehicles for Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative
The board approved the lease agreement for three vehicles for the FHSEC Infant Toddler Program. The vehicles will be used by staff for home-based services, providing the district a more cost-efficient and reliable transportation option.

Surplus Property
The board approved with the sale of property at 510 Constitution.

Social Emotional Success  Study Session
A study session was held that focused on the Social Emotional Success pillar of Kansans CAN outcomes. Board meeting attendees worked in small groups that included EHS students, principals, district leadership, and members of the Social Emotional Success Focus Group. Social Emotional Success is a broad topic that includes building and maintaining relationships, resolving conflicts, problem-solving, self-regulating, and increasing employability skills. School-based mental health services and other community resources were discussed. Social Emotional Success supports the BOE goal "to improve and ensure an effective culture for learning for all students, parents, staff, and community members."
