The Book of Zentangle . . . now in Paperback!

We love revisiting and re-reading The Book of Zentangle.

This book is designed to speak to each side of the brain. Most of the left pages are full page reproductions of Maria's Zentangle-inspired paintings interspersed with tiles by Maria and Rick (for the right side of
the brain). Most of the right pages are words (for the left side of the brain).

This is not a "how-to" book, rather it is a visual gem of Zentangle art and narrative that tells the story behind the Zentangle Method through the voice of its founders, Rick and Maria.

The book includes an in depth description of Zentangle origins and describes the method in detail. It covers characteristics and philosophies of a Zentangle practice, as well as testimonials, an extensive glossary, playful notes by Rick and Maria about the images, and an extensive bibliography and index.

The paperback edition was printed here in Massachusetts and we are excited to share it with you.

Zentangle's First Peer Reviewed Study

Introducing Zentangle in the Early Years  is a peer reviewed study by Gillian McAuliffe, CZT and Sandra Hesterman. It evaluates five outcomes of a Zentangle practice for children during early development.

We first met Gillian McAuliffe when she travelled from Perth, Austraia to attend a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) seminar. We hold our CZT seminars in the United States in the state of Rhode Island, which is about as far from Perth as you can get. (If you go any farther, you're closer!)

We asked Gillian why she would travel so far to come to seminar. She told us she was school Principal in Perth. She had a student who had suffered from a debilitating issue for several years. After she learned about the Zentangle Method, Gillian decided to use it at her next meeting with the student. She thought that, instead of a continuation of failed attempts at conversation, they might at least draw together.

Find out what happened with Gillian and read excerpts from the study (which are awesome) at this BLOG Zentangle post.

How many permutations do you think are possible to re-arrange these nine tiles in?

100?
1,000?
100,000?
More?

Yes, a LOT more . . . that is, if Rick's math is correct.

Check out his math (please tell him if he's got it right or not) and the moral of this story at  this BLOG Zentangle post.

Zentangle is not Zen. They are for sure two very different things. However there are some overlaps I see in the philosophies and perspectives of the two methods. I was recently drawn to this list because it so reminded me of the approach we take when we teach Zentangle classes. I was enamored by the idea of letting go. When, as artists, we are able to "let go", our creative process takes us on a path that is nurturing, supportive, and can lead to side effects such as uncontrollable smiling and in some instances belly laughs.
      1. Let go of comparing
      2. Let go of competing
      3. Let go of judgements
      4. Let go of anger
      5. Let go of regrets
      6. Let go of worrying
      7. Let go of blame
      8. Let go of guilt
      9. Let go of fear
      10. Have a proper belly laugh at least once a day.

General Pencil, one of the last pencil factories in America, makes all our graphite and white charcoal pencils.

The New York Times just published a look inside their factory. The photography is stunning. The next time you pick up that luscious, buttery white charcoal pencil or you add your shades of grey to your tangles, you'll better appreciate what goes into making those the magic wands.

The bonus to this story is that the good people that work there are also good friends of Zentangle. In fact, the owner is a Certified Zentangle Teacher!
