Smart Devices that Stop Leaks & Water Damage
The recent CES 2018 featured new products that detect leaks and connect directly to your home’s WiFi. These offer a smartphone app enabling you to control them and receive alerts remotely. The smartphone app will alert you if there’s a problem. A smart water-shutoff valve, for example, lets you turn off your home’s water supply from anywhere. The ability to shut the water off immediately is a huge advantage in preventing water damage.

Here are a few new smart monitors that could save your home or business from extensive water damage.

Flo is a smart water-shutoff valve with built-in sensors that monitor water usage and detect leaks. It’s claimed to measure water flow, pressure, and temperature, and combine that data with machine learning to detect even small drip leaks. If Flo detects a leak, it will automatically shut off the water to minimize damage.

The Guardian by Elexa system consists of a water-shutoff valve and three wireless leak detectors. All the products work together, so when a leak detector senses water and is triggered, the valve will automatically shuts off your water. It can be a DIY installation saving you from calling a plumber.

Phyn Plus is a sensor-laden water-shutoff valve that’s claimed to detect four kinds of leaks: drip leaks, pinhole leaks, frozen-pipe leaks, and burst-pipe leaks. It achieves this by taking measurements with a very sensitive pressure sensor and an ultrasonic flow meter that “listens” to sounds in the water.

Replacing Windows
Jim demonstrates the best way to have old windows removed when putting in replacements. Remember the quality of the window is only a portion of the window replacement process. The installation is equally as important.
Replacing Existing Windows
If your home has old and/or inefficient windows, it might be more cost-effective to replace them than to try to improve their energy efficiency. New, energy-efficient windows eventually pay for themselves through lower heating and cooling costs, and sometimes even lighting costs.
When selecting windows for energy efficiency, it's important to first consider their  energy performance ratings  in relation to your climate and your home's design. A window's energy efficiency is dependent upon all of its components.  Window frames   conduct heat, contributing to a window's overall energy efficiency, particularly its  U-factor . Glazing or glass technologies have become very sophisticated. Low-E glass ideally works to reflect the ultraviolet rays, reject infrared and keep your home cooler in a warmer climate. The Low-E coating reflects heat back to its source so it helps your home stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The coating won't scratch off because it is applied to the inside of the glass. It also helps protects against UV fading of any nearby furniture.
Argon gas is injected between the panes of glass to help prevent warm air from penetrating in the summer. Argon, a viscous, slow-moving gas, allows for less convection than would ordinary air, minimizing convective currents within the window and reducing the transfer of heat across the window.
Even the most energy-efficient window must be properly installed to ensure energy efficiency. Therefore, it's best to have a professional install your windows.
