PAWS has partnered with Nemours, one of the premier children's hospitals in the country, in order to offer individualized pet therapy services for its patients, family members & staff. Our Nemours pet therapy teams have achieved Master's Certification with PAWS and are required to attend a training session, specific to Nemours visitation.

Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.

ON-LINE COURSES
Register on-line and we will send you the link to the Open Learning course.
Many of our teams visit patients in mental health sites. PAWS believes it is important to help teams understand different mental health issues, how disorders present themselves, and how teams can provide the best and safest visit possible to people in this situation. By understanding why people behave in a particular way, PAWS teams can provide a more personalized visit for the patients as well as assist site staff with increasing motivation, lessening anxiety, and giving the person hope for their future.

Register on-line and we will send you the link to the Open Learning portion of this course.
PAWS welcomes experienced volunteer pet therapy team members to help newer teams familiarize themselves with the visiting process. Participation in this program offers PAWS service hours to teams.

Making People Feel Better One Pet at a Time
|
|
"Zara and I were on our way to visit patients on 4C at the Christiana Hospital when, as were walking though the lobby, a hospital staff member asked if she could please pet Zara. Zara went right up to the lady who hugged and petted her.
I noticed that the young lady started crying. I asked if she was O
K
and she stated, 'I had a rough day and I used to have a dog. Whenever I had a rough day, I always looked forward to going home because my dog always made me feel better. Zara just reminded me of my dog and how much I miss him being there for me, but please know that Zara made me feel better. Thank you so much for coming here!'"

2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards - Nominate Your Hero Now!
|
|
Is your dog a hero?
Nominations for the 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Awards® are now open! The Hero Dog Awards are an annual competition that honors heroes on both ends of the leash: whether your dog is a courageous service dog, saves lives as a law enforcement dog, or just loves to greet you with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day, we want to hear your story. Submit a nomination for your dog in one of the seven categories (including therapy dog) and they could be featured on the Hallmark Channel next fall!
After two rounds of online public voting, the dog with the most votes in each category is announced and will be awarded $2,500 for their chosen charity partner. The third & final voting round determines the 2018 American Hero Dog, who will be announced live at the gala next September, receiving an additional $5,000 grant for their charity partner.
This year, PAWS for People is an official charity partner!

Goals Aren't Just for People

"The start of a new year can signal a fresh start for pets needing a change in their routine. For example, with over 50 percent of pets in the U.S. classified as overweight, there's no better time for owners to commit to a new diet and exercise regimen for their pets. Need more ideas? Here are ten resolutions to make this year your pet's healthiest year yet!"

A great big Thank You to everyone who helped with this year's Holiday Gift Wrapping at Barnes & Noble.
The gift of your time during the busy holiday season is truly appreciated.
In total 238 volunteers filled 445 volunteer shifts sharing 1,190 hours of valuable time.
That is a priceless gift!!!
A special thank you to the Christiana, Concord & Exton Barnes & Noble locations for their kindness to our gift wrap and pet therapy volunteers.
This project helped raise nearly $14,000 for PAWS for People.
The success is about more than just fundraising, however. New pet therapy teams were recruited, new potential sites were found and frazzled holiday shoppers learned the true value of both gift wrapping and pet therapy.
Thank you so much and Happy New Year!
Below are just a few of the PAWS Therapy Companions who volunteered their time to the Holiday Gift Wrapping Project.
