MCS
Heroes of the Week

Morgan Knight

Congratulations to this week's Heroes Rhonda Leguina and Morgan Knight! We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.

A Note to Rhonda Leguina, 1st Grade Aide and Carpool Blesser:
"Mrs. Leguina: A big shout out of thanks for never failing to bring a smile to my face as I drive through carpool every morning; every afternoon. Your upbeat, happy attitude is contagious; so very appreciated at the beginning and end of a day. And your lion costume today brought our entire carpool more smiles than you could ever imagine. You go, girl! Thank you for always brightening our day. Love, The Volner Family"

"Rhonda: Your infectious smile and joyful demeanor brightens the day of staff, parents, and students alike. Your love for the students is evident both in the classroom and on the field (and EVEN at the Gaga Pit!) We are so honored and blessed to be part of the 1st grade aide team with you. Your support and encouragement to us "newbies" is invaluable. In short, you ROCK. 1st Grade Aide Team"

"Rhonda: Thank you for bringing passion and enthusiasm to MCS each day. You are the perfect balance of perkiness and motherliness. Thank you for loving on our kiddos and making this a great place to be.
5th Grade Team"

"Dear Rhonda: I look forward to your happy face each morning and certainly you have turned many difficult mornings around for our families. I know you have for mine. Love, Ashlee"

A Note to Morgan Knight, Middle School Science Teacher:
"Mrs. Knight: You are creative, kind, patient, tech-savvy, and always wanting to do your BEST for your students. Your creativity shines when you try new things and are always researching ways to teach something better. Your kind and gentle spirit help students feel loved and safe with you. You are one of the most patient people I know and show God's grace in your patience on crazy days. Tech-savvy to the fullest, you know about the latest apps and are one of the first teachers to try something new in your class. You always want to do your BEST and never will settle for the ok. What I love most about you is your heart for the Lord, you have truly shown God's grace in all that you do. I feel blessed beyond measure to work with you but to also call you a friend. Thanks for always being a hero to not only your students but teachers as well."

DifferenceMakerChapelDifference Maker Chapel
We were honored to welcome special guest speaker, Jennifer Friend of Project Hope Alliance, to our Elementary and Middle School Difference Maker Chapels on Monday. Jennifer shared stories from her childhood about how people blessed her (and her family) in tangible ways which made a huge difference in her life. In the midst of financial scarcity and experiencing homelessness, she felt cared for and SEEN. She challenged our students to have eyes to see the people around them and to look for ways to make a difference in their lives. Students also heard this very powerful message: "God used the sad parts of my childhood for me to serve others now." Jennifer shared that she has been called to lead Project Hope Alliance and her mission is to end the cycle of homelessness for children here in Orange County. The work that they are doing is changing lives!

Jennifer introduced "214" - a model of the motel room that her family lived in (4 kids, 2 adults). She highlighted some things for the students to pay attention to as they walked through 214. (It is called "214" because it is 214 square feet of space.) Every student got to travel through 214 with their homeroom class over the course of the week. We hope that they came home with questions, stories, thoughts, and prayers bubbling up after that experience.

We want to share the 214 Resource Guide we put together for our teachers and families to use in conjunction with 214. It provides questions you may want to discuss and some opportunities to go deeper as a family.

If you were not able to attend the chapels, we hope you will enjoy these videos (please note, camera work was done by student volunteers):

This video about Mark was shared during the middle school chapel
During the week of January 29th, we will be launching the 2018 Difference Maker Grant Applications for 4th-8th grade students. Students will see information about this on Schoology, we will share in e-News and in an email to our families, and we will have printed copies available in the middle school and outside of our Community Connections Department.

WANT TO HELP GIVE HOPE? We have had many students and parents ask how they can get plugged in to help with the work Project Hope Alliance is doing. Kaitlyn Ramsey is the volunteer Coordinator for Project Hope Alliance, [email protected]

Contact Ali Bray at [email protected] if you have questions about our Difference Maker Program.

PJ Day Fun!

Our Share 2 Wear this month was one for the history books, as many homerooms had a record number of students participate in Pajama Day!  We saw everything from matching sets of pajamas to eye masks, to warm and cozy robes!

But most importantly, our middle school students answered the call to be difference makers in our community. During Monday's Difference Maker Chapel, Jennifer Friend shared with us about her experience growing up  as a child in a homeless family, and how people along the way gave her hope and showed her the love of Jesus.  Her message hit home with our students, as they responded during Share 2 Wear on Tuesday by collecting a total of $783.67 for Project Hope Alliance!  Many generously donated more than $1, which will go a long way in helping homeless children right now in our community.  Thank you middle school students!

Shalimar Gathering - Friday, February 9th
Our third visit to Shalimar is almost here! Each visit, MCS students share the love of Jesus, learn from, and simply get to know our neighbors on Shalimar Drive just 5 miles away. We build bridges across cultures and connect over activities, Bible studies, games, and more! It has been simply beautiful to see God at work during this sweet time together. To come, fill out the permission slip and turn it in to Miss Seaman or Miss Peña on or before Wednesday, February 7th. We'll meet outside the MCS front office after school on Friday to head over to Shalimar at 3:15pm. We plan to be back at MCS at 5:30pm. We also utilize parent drivers, so if you are available to drive, please indicate how many students you can take on the permission slip.

Hope your child is able to take part in the amazing work God is doing through the MCS/Shalimar partnership!
