Friday, January 19, 10:00 AM
PAWS Office, Newark, DE

Please join us if you are currently visiting in assisted living, skilled care, hospitals, dementia units, or adult day cares - or just want to learn some new visiting skills.

Friday, January 26, 10:00 AM
PAWS Office, Newark, DE
Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.

ON-LINE COURSES
Register on-line and we will send you the link to the Open Learning course.
Many of our teams visit patients in mental health sites. PAWS believes it is important to help teams understand different mental health issues, how disorders present themselves, and how teams can provide the best and safest visit possible to people in this situation. By understanding why people behave in a particular way, PAWS teams can provide a more personalized visit for the patients as well as assist site staff with increasing motivation, lessening anxiety, and giving the person hope for their future.
_____
Register on-line and we will send you the link to the Open Learning portion of this course.
PAWS welcomes experienced volunteer pet therapy team members to help newer teams familiarize themselves with the visiting process. Participation in this program offers PAWS service hours to teams.

Providing Compassion and Support
|
|
PAWS recently received this sweet note on Facebook Messenger.
"I'm a nurse who works for Christiana Care Oncology and Hematology in the Helen Graham Cancer Center.
"I just really wanted to thank Spirit and his human for their very special time with a patient who was having a rough day. Spirit and his person
sat
with the patient for at least 15 or 20 minutes and showed him such compassion and support in a way we couldn't provide.
"So thank you!"

Julie Miller, Lacey, & Shelby
Julie joined PAWS in November 2008 with Lacey, her Yellow Lab. Lacey's gentle and sweet nature was perfect for pet therapy! Julie knew that Shelby, her Black Lab, would also make an awesome therapy companion and now Julie visits with both dogs (one at a time, of course!) As an Advanced Team, Julie with Shelby or Lacey visit as a PAWS for Reading team at the Elkton and Rising Sun branches of the Cecil County Public Library as well as Kenmore Elementary School. What a great team!

Ed joined PAWS in June of 2011, with his handsome Golden Retriever, Chase. Ed recognized the beauty of pet therapy and knew that Chase would bring joy to others. After Chase passed away, Ed wanted to continue what he had started with Chase, bringing joy to others through pet therapy. He certified Tully, his sweet Golden Retriever girl. Team Martin visited with Cadia Rehab Broadmeadow, Cadia Rehab Silverside, Nemours Hospital for Children and the Helen Graham Cancer Center. What a great team!
