Russell's Ritings....
A man had too much to drink at a party. On his way home he lost his wallet. A policeman found him searching for it under a streetlight. The policeman joined him in the search. Ten minutes passed. They still did not find the wallet. The policeman asked, "Are you sure you lost your wallet under this streetlight?" The man replied, "No, I lost the wallet back there" and pointed to a place in the darkness. The policeman scratched his head and inquired, "Then why are we looking for the wallet here?" The inebriated guy replied, "Because there's more light here."
The revelation of Jesus Christ gives us the light we need to search for meaning and fulfillment. Robert Browning in his poem, "A Death in the Desert" wrote:
"I say, the acknowledgement of God in Christ
Accepted by thy reason, solves for thee
All questions in the earth and out of it,
And has so far advance thee to be wise."
Let's seek and find HIM! I hope to see you Sunday. The sermon is "Three Roads to Discipleship" and the texts are Acts 9:34, Luke 24:32, and Luke 10:30. And the folks are friendly!
From the heart,
Russell

BRUCE AND CAROLYN HOHNE
Bruce and Carolyn met in 1990 while working for the Rohm & Haas Chemical Company in Philadelphia, PA. Bruce, born and raised in Baltimore, obtained his PhD in Chemistry from University of North Carolina. Carolyn was born and raised in Bloomsburg, PA and earned her MS in Instructional Technology from Bloomsburg University. They married in 1992 and had their marriage put to the test with the birth of their first son, Derek, in 1993. Derek was born 3 months premature with a severe heart defect. He lived for 5 months. He taught them a lot about love and the value of life in his short lifespan. In 1995, they welcomed their daughter, Brielle, who recently graduated from Cornell University and is currently pursuing her PhD in Chemical Engineering at Penn State University. In 1997, their son, Carter, was born. He is currently a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the Colorado School Mines.
|
|
Bruce worked in Information Technology at Rohm and Haas for 29 years when a merger with Dow Chemical caused him to lose his job. He then worked as an IT Architect for Cephalon and then for Yellowbook. An opportunity presented itself and he became a fulltime professor in the Management of Information Systems Department - part of the Fox School of Business - at Temple University. Carolyn has been a Performance Improvement & Training Consultant off and on for the past 22 years. Her latest book on human performance improvement is due out in February 2018.
Bruce and Carolyn love to travel and are avid skiers. Bruce enjoys woodworking and restoring cars. Carolyn enjoys golfing and bicycling.
The Hohne's have called Lumberton, NJ home for the past 25 years, but that's about to change. They are currently building a home in St. Mary's Glacier and anticipate moving to Colorado fulltime sometime in March.
Carolyn was raised in Methodist churches and Bruce in a Lutheran church. Bruce and Carolyn have been members of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Holly, and for the past 17 years, have been active members of the Medford United Methodist church in Medford, NJ. They had planned to visit several of the Methodist churches in the area, but after their first visit to Evergreen UMC, they felt like it was a good fit and their search for a new church home was complete. They both hope to become active members at UMCE and look forward to getting to know their new church family.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORK OF
CHURCH AND SOCIETY
Facilitators: Church and Society Team
Church and Society committees across our United Methodist Church work in areas of important social concern both within the U.S. and around the world. During the fall of 2017, the Inclusiveness Task Force reformed as the Church and Society Team. Guided by our mission of "living our lives and serving Christ in the contemporary world through faith, action and justice," we strive to live out our faith in our everyday lives. We welcome all who are interested to join this team and to learn more about the work of Church and Society during this four-week series. Each week we will explore two of the six focus areas on which Church and Society concentrates and examine the Biblical foundations of these focus areas.
