HELLO FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM

Greetings in 2018!

We look forward to welcoming your students back to campus tomorrow. This upcoming semester is sure to be filled with many meaningful learning experiences, opportunities to show a growth mindset, and building lasting connections within our community. We are honored to be a part of your student's learning journey!

As we move through our year, reflecting on our mission and purpose of Chico Country Day Charter School  provides inspiration. Our mission is to provide a safe, joyful community where all learners are inspired to achieve their personal best. Our purpose is to educate students toward becoming engaged and thriving learners. As we aspire to our mission and work towards our purpose, our staff is continually collaborating, learning and reflecting about student success. The upcoming months will be filled with activities, field work and projects that deepen student learning and show the students the value of their work. These will culminate with our school wide Exhibition Nights on April 11 and 12.

One resource that we shared last year at this time, still holds a special place in our hearts. Student mindset can impact learning and a content area where we sometimes find challenges in perceived ability is within math. We have students who have a narrative about themselves that they "are not math people" or "are terrible at math." You can imagine the uphill battle a student faces if that's the self-talk they experience. A researcher and teacher from Stanford, Jo Boaler, is working to shift mathematical mindsets. On her website,  Youcubed.org, you can find resources about growth mindset, brain science, math activities, and articles for parents. Research tells us that our ways of talking with kids about their learning and using labels for them has huge implications in their mindset. Check out this new video about student potential from Jo Boaler entitled "Rethinking Giftedness."

Looking forward to 2018!

Mr. Eubanks thanks everyone who donated gloved to the MS Science Program.  If you have any old pots and pans you would like to get rid of, he would love your extras!

The Holiday Fundraiser wrapped up before Christmas break and we would like to thank Shuberts, Upper Park Clothing, Massa Rice and Maisie Jane's for supporting CCDS! Kudos to the PTP officers for making it easier to shop locally and also support CCDS at the same time. You're awesome!

Thank you to all that participated in the Chico Holidays Together. It's impressive how much the CCDS community continues to go above and beyond when it comes to helping those in need! Thank you for your generosity.

Do you have a child enrolled in CCDS and another who will be ready for kindergarten in the fall of 2018?   We need to reserve kindergarten spaces for all the younger siblings coming into CCDS.  Please fill out the school application and return to Stacy in the main office. When filling out the application, note the name of your other children attending CCDS.  To enter kindergarten, children need to be 5 by September 1. We need to receive these ASAP.

Admissions/Lottery Information Night
An Admission/Lottery Information Meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 24 in the Middle School Common Area at 6 p.m. This is an opportunity for new families to learn more about CCDS and our lottery process. Mrs. Fischer will be leading the meeting and there will be an opportunity to tour both schools and fill out a lottery application. To RSVP for this meeting,

Help Us Spread the Word
The lottery also includes 1st-8th grade. This helps us form our wait list for the upcoming year. When we lose a family, we use our wait list to fill those empty spots.  If you have friends or family that might be interested in having their children attend CCDS, please have them call Stacy at 895-2650 x201. The lottery application deadline is February 1.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Auction of Excellence is April 7

Save the date for the Auction for Excellence! Our school's biggest fundraising event will be held on the evening of  Saturday, April 7,  at a beautiful new venue: The Big Room at Sierra Nevada Brewery. Planning is underway and the auction committee is looking for parents who can help in a variety of ways.

Help Needed
The Committee needs help with submitting online donation requests (no face to face contact necessary), as well as help asking local businesses for their support. There are a lot of businesses on our list, but many hands make light work and this job is so important to our fundraising success!

Additionally, the auction committee is looking for some volunteers to fill a few holes:

Online Auction:
We are looking for someone willing to take pictures of our online auction items as they come available, and to help input the pictures and descriptions of each item onto our auction website. The website is easy to navigate, and this job does not require any commitment on the night of our live auction event at Sierra Nevada.

Banking:
Help us make the checkout process run smoothly on the night of the auction.

Check-In:
We need two volunteers to check attendees in and distribute bid paddles. An easy job at the beginning of our auction night.

Donations
Do you own a vacation property, or know of someone who may want to donate theirs? Please get in contact with us ASAP! We are currently seeking donations of all kinds for our auction and would appreciate hearing from you if you have any contacts or leads for us to pursue.

Here is an auction item wish list to give you a better idea of what we'd love to see at the auction: Check out our  WISH LIST here.

Click the following link  if you already know what you would like to donate. Just fill out the form and the auction committee will contact you.  Auction for Excellence Donation Form

Please get in touch with Irene Henkens or Kerry Hermann if you would like to share your ideas or have any questions.

In 3rd grade one of the life skills that we focus on is: Perseverance

WHAT IS PERSEVERANCE?
Perseverance means being purposeful when putting your best into activities. Perseverance is sticking with something and staying committed, no matter how long it takes or what obstacles occur.  When you use the life skill of perseverance, you don't let anything stop you or distract you from attaining your goals.  Perseverance means you keep on trying.

WHY PRACTICE PERSEVERANCE?
When you persevere, people can depend on you. You follow through and keep your commitments. You don't give up when faced with a challenge. Instead, you learn how to work through challenges.  People can depend on you to do your best when faced with a challenge. Without perseverance, people can give up on things too easily.   Also, perseverance can help with friendships.  When we persevere, we work through issues with our friends. When a friendship is tested, you try to find a way to rebuild the friendship.

HOW DO YOU PRACTICE PERSEVERANCE?
Choose a commitment and make a wise choice. Then practice perseverance by sticking with this commitment even when problems or challenges occur.  When faced with a challenge, make a list of possible solutions.  Then move forward with a solution. Also, when you commit to an activity, pace yourself and be persistent. When troubles or doubts come up, be like a ship in a storm. Stay on course and ride the waves.  Don't let yourself become blown off course.  When working through friendship issues, stand by your friends by finding positive ways to work through issues.

HOW TO TEACH PERSEVERANCE AT HOME:
Things to practice...
  • Think before deciding to commit to something
  • Learn to pace yourself
  • Set small goals that will lead you to a final outcome. Then stick with the goals
  • Take one step at a time, remain steady
  • Don't let doubts or troubles blow you off course.
  • Make solution lists.  Think of a few possible solutions. Then choose one.

In honor of our 20th anniversary last year, we are continuing our Buy-a-Brick campaign. These beautifully crafted, laser- engraved bricks are a way to celebrate your family's time on campus. This will be an on-going campaign that will not only add beauty to our campus, but will also serve as a visual history of our school and families.

There are flyers in the office, along with a sample brick. The bricks will be delivered in batches to be installed in several locations around campus. Support CCDS and honor your memories!
