Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. Regina, like all of Saskatchewan, was in a deep freeze starting a few days before Christmas and lasting until New Year's Day. I live 2 blocks away from an outdoor skating rink but unfortunately it was too cold to venture outside with my 7 year old daughter.

One piece of news that might be of interest to some is a recent article that discusses the dollar value of Edmonton Public Library on the city's economy. Similar return on investment studies have been done elsewhere but I'm particularly interested in any done in Saskatchewan. I would love to know if libraries in our province have engaged in similar work in their community. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call 306.585.5418 if your library will undertake, is in the process, or has completed a return on investment study. SLA can be a resource for collecting and sharing this information. Having these types of figures will support ongoing library advocacy efforts in our province.Read more

Jeannie Straub
On December 21, 2017, SLA lost a friend and colleague when Jeannie Straub was tragically killed in a car accident while on her way home from B.C. for Christmas with her husband and  the family dog Opie. Her husband Sean Flotre survived the accident and is beginning the long road to recovery in Vancouver; sadly, Opie also died in the crash.
During the last several years, Jeannie had been the primary
designer of graphic materials for SLA. The newsletter (SLAte), SLW posters, bookmarks, web banners, Book Spine Poetry website and Conference logos and  programs all seemed that much more vibrant when created by Jeannie's skillful hand. At just 41 years old, she was in the prime of her life, and for so many reasons we will miss her very much. Her work for SLA was youthful and meaningful, and she changed our public face to reflect a more energetic and compelling profile.

A gofundme fundraiser has been established in Jeannie's memory and to help Sean through his recovery. Those wishing to donate can contribute here

In his 2002 book Choice Cuts, Mark Kurlansky wrote that, "Food is . . . one of the single most significant trademarks of a culture."  It is this connection between food and the culture of a place and its people, that prompted the One Book, One Province Committee to select Amy Jo Ehman's book, Out of Old Saskatchewan Kitchens, as the selected title for the 2018 One Book, One Province Program.

Out of Old Saskatchewan Kitchens tells the story of our province through our diverse culinary history. Stories and archival photographs supplement the recipes in the book to tell the history of Saskatchewan as evidenced through the food that we (have and in some cases continue to) eat.

This year's selection provides many entry points for libraries, book clubs, and other organizations, to engage with the book. Try some of the recipes at home, or in your library. Partner with a commercial cooking program at a local school to learn more about the history of Saskatchewan through its food. Encourage your library users to share recipes and stories that tell their own family history. The possibilities are endless!

One Book, One Province runs throughout March 2018 and planning is well underway for events and author visits around the province. Visit http://onebooksk.ca for more information and ideas. And be sure to follow the program on Facebook (One Book One Province Saskatchewan), Twitter (@OneBookSK), and Instagram (onebooksk). Send us information about your One Book, One Province program and we'll promote we'll even help you to promote it!

Name: Dorothea Warren
Title: Executive Director Saskatchewan Library Association

I have recently joined the Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) and am looking forward to working with the many dedicated library workers, leaders and supporters in the province and beyond.
My previous employment has been primarily in the Public Service in Yukon and Saskatchewan working in the health and social services sectors. Most recently I had the opportunity to work as an Assistant Deputy Minister with the Yukon Government's Department of Health and Social Services. This was an active portfolio of responsibilities including: income support, addictions, family and children's programs, youth justice, disability and seniors services as well as cross sector leadership in addressing homelessness and FASD. Moving to the Yukon was a wonderful adventure and allowed my husband and me to experience Canada's north. We were simply awestruck by the spectacular scenery, history of the Chilkoot Trail and Klondike gold rush and the present day cultural mix. The strong influence of First Nations is foundational to the territory and is complemented by those with roots back to frontier days, the arrival of new Canadians, and many "transplants" from other jurisdictions who have made their home in this fascinating part of Canada. The Whitehorse Public Library which shares space with the Kwanlun Dun Cultural Center is located on the traditional territory of both the Kwanlun Dun First Nation and Ta'an Kwachun Council and overlooks the Yukon River. Similar to public libraries in Saskatchewan it provides a gathering place and a resource for all ages. I might add that the Yukon climate in winter is not typically quite as harsh as that in Saskatchewan. Read more

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets

The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community.  Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download  in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
