Worship Focus for April 29
Bearing Fruit
Rev. Hardy Kim, preaching
Greetings!

As we prepare for our “One-Service Sunday” in a few days, many people are busy making preparations related to liturgy, prayers, music, and hospitality. We want to make sure that our worship is a joyful sharing where the best gifts of our different worshiping groups can be enjoyed by folks who don’t usually get to experience them. At the same time, I’ve heard from many of you about how these services carry an even deeper meaning—that they have allowed you all to feel even more connected to the entirety of the SVPC community. Having one service together is certainly more than just about bridging differences between preferences for different words or songs.

So, I not only urge you to show up for a rich and varied worship service. I am also hoping that you will bring open hearts—to hear unfamiliar tones and images that convey God’s message to you. I ask you to bring your hopes and dreams for the future of the entire community, along with a sense of the gifts and passions that you bring to make that future possible. I hope all of this will enliven our “One Service” for you, and for all those you greet on that day!

Faithfully,
Hardy

P.S. And I look forward to seeing you all at the choir concert in the evening! It is sure to be a great celebration of the artistic talents of so many of our community members, and I look forward to receiving the beautiful gifts they offer to us.
Theme for Sunday

“…The essential aspect of the restoration of community is a context in which each citizen chooses to be accountable rather than entitled. Accountability is the willingness to care for the whole, and it flows out of the kind of conversations we have about the new story we want to take our identity from. It means we have conversations of what we can do to create the future. Entitlement is a conversation about what others can or need to do to create the future for us.”-Peter Block, Community: The Structure of Belonging
Questions for Reflection

  • Who do you think of when you hear the word “community?” It could be a particular person or a group of people. What makes this person, or group of people, a good example of community?

  • Picture a situation when you felt SURROUNDED by community. What was good about it? What was hard about it? What made it special?

Scripture Reading : John 15:1-8

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you.
