George Washington Cable was an American novelist and reformer being notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been called "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century," as well as the "first modern southern writer," for his revolutionary treatment of important social issues, particularly racism and classism.

BUCK, Pearl S(ydenstricker) [Mrs. Richard J. Walsh] [1892-1973]

Pearl Sydenstricker Buck also known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu, was an American writer and novelist. As the daughter of missionaries, Buck spent most of her life before 1934 in China. Her novel The Good Earth was the best-selling fiction book in the United States in 1931 and 1932 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces".

DOUGLAS, Lloyd Cassel [1877-1951]

This mini collection includes only two items, both extremely scarce and important to any Lloyd C. Douglas or religious collection. There is a Douglas Typed Letter Signed (TLS) and his very first publication copyright 1905, More Than a Prophet.

Lloyd Cassel Douglas, was an American minister and author including The Robe (1942) and over a dozen other religious and moral issues inspired novels and was one of the most popular novelists of his period,
Douglas once said in an interview, that "If my novels are entertaining I am glad, but they are not written so much for the purpose of entertainment as of inspiration."
Douglas's main purpose was to present a Christian thesis in the form of a novel and include in the gospel narratives the aspect of human interest.
His first published book when Douglas was about 28, a year after he was married was "More Than A Prophet" Published by W B Conkey Company, Chicago, Copyright 1905. An important first book and extremely scarce. Only 3 copies found anywhere plus a TLS to Eustace B. A remarkable collection of 41 British Parliamentary paper ex Public Record Office (British National Archives) and 11 sewn reports in paper wrappers. Very clean copies in near fine condition.

The Treaty of Washington 1871-75 UK documents are historically significant and of great importance to American, Great Britain and Canadian history. Historical context and importance. In 1871 the United States demanded compensation from Great Britain for damages inflicted on U.S. commerce during the Civil War by the Alabama, a Confederate warship built in England. DODGE, Mary (Elizabeth) Mapes (Lizzie) [1831-1905]

Mary Mapes Dodge was an American children's writer best known for her story Hans Brinker (1865). She was also editor of the illustrated magazine Hearth and Home and the phenomenally successful children's periodical, St. Nicholas Magazine.

This collection includes 8 Autographed Signed Letters (ASL); 2 Ephemera, 1 Photo and 3 Books inscribed  to Dodge (thus owned by Dodge).

1) ALS dated "Feb 4." and addressed to "My dear Suzy", an answer to a young reader of Dodge's St. Nicholas Magazine, because her co-editor William Fayal Clarke is mentioned. A 28 piece collection of ephemera spanning two generations of a well to do family headed by first Nathaniel Clarke Wallace (1844-1901) [8 items] and his son, T. G. (Thomas George) Wallace (1879-1921) 20 items].

The family was based in Woodbridge, Ontario however were located in Ottawa given each of these two men were both Members of Parliament. These pieces of ephemera include Government, Social and Formal Dinner  invitations and even a law act where N.C. Wallace was deeply involved.
Most interesting insight into a lifestyle of two related families from 1871 to 1921.

Voltaire (1694-1778) lived in exile in England from 1725-28 and became a fervent admirer of Newtonian philosophy which he introduced into France. At the time of its publication, European physics was divided into the followers of Descartes' corpuscular-mechanistic theories on the Continent and the English Newtonians.

 George M. Conway. Travel diary of a trip on a ship from Cardiff, England to Naples, to Almeira (Andulsia, Spain), and then return to Newport, and finally home by train to Bristol. 26 June-23 July 1904. Bound in black cloth, all edges red. Written in mostly in ink.

George M. Conway was 26 years of age when he took this trip. Included in the journal are copies of the ship's log for several days, 3 hand-drawn maps, clippings, and a plan of a temple (Jerusalem area, and nothing to do this trip). Approximately 100 pages are original content relating to the voyage. There are also 60 pages transcribed by Conway from an encyclopedia ...Click on for more information and photos;

CARLETON, Sir Guy 1st Baron DORCHESTER [1724-1808]

Written in French, on a watermarked, fine-laid paper, dated June 24, 1775, Boldy signed by Sir Guy Carleton in dark brown ink. Carleton's signature, is next to an intact square papered seal.
Lieutenant-Governor Hector Theophilus Cramahé countersigns the document with his signature below Carleton's
12-1/4 x 8-1/2 inches, one page with integral leaf. Several folds, scattered light foxing and toning, and several very minor edge tears. Very good condition and overall quite nice.

Carleton presses to fill the militia ranks. In part:  "As it is necessary for the service of the King... to create militia companies in the various parishes of this Province... do hereby name and establish said Mr. Jean Bte. Belaire as captain of a militia company..." Jean Bapiste Bellaire is being made a Captain of Militia in the Parish of Ste-Pierre. Quebec...   Click for more information and photos;

Signed by 'Henry : C: Darling Colonel [...] President'; and counter-signed 'Approved Gordon Drummond' with the signature of Captain George Lowndes, advocate.
 
List of members of Court Martial. Letter written to "Lord Sydney" Thomas Townshend, 1733-1800 ASL contents: Montreal, 14th April, 1789 and reads: ... "My Lord I have the honour of your lordships' letter acquainting me you had presented to the King the Address of the Lieutenant Governor and of the States of the Island of Gurnsey congratulating his Majesty on the happy reestablishment of his health which his majesty was pleased to receive in the most gracious manner...

This letter likely a reference to Geo III's problems with porphyria, from which he suffered. George III had a particularly severe form of porphyria. His first attack occurred in 1765, four years after his marriage to Queen Charlotte....
Amherst held the office of Governor of Guernsey between 1770 and 1797.

Robert Adams had been know to Matthew Visscher before as Adams had to appear before three times before the Commissioners for Conspiracies in 1880 of which Visscher was one of four in judgment of Adams be a loyalist of not. Adams was discharged from confinement August 15th, 1780 by the Commissioners on 200 pounds bail. 
 
Matthew Visscher (1751-93), Matthew Visscher became a Revolutionary stalwart. Visscher received a number of bounty rights for wartime service in the military and on the homefront. In 1784, he was elected to the New York State Assembly and served two terms...Click on for more information and photos;

This image depicts distraught Grenadiers standing and kneeling by the side of a fallen General Wolfe at the Plains of Abraham, Quebec. The on-going combat can be seen in the background. Uncommon engraving.

Condition: Some light soiling and wear, a couple of old fold lines on the top left side in border, clouds in sky a pinkish colour, otherwise image is very good.
