FEATURED OPPORTUNITY:
WOU Bilingual Teacher Scholars Program
Soon to be entering its fourth year, the Western Oregon University Bilingual Teacher Scholars Program ("WOU Scholars") is a unique collaboration between the Hillsboro School District and Western Oregon University that provides university education for students who would like to become Spanish-English bilingual teachers. Financial aid and paid summer internships are provided to qualifying students. Graduates receive first preference for interviews and future employment in HSD schools, allowing them to return and make a difference in their community. Students must apply to WOU first by Monday, Jan. 15, then to the program by Feb. 15.

Deadline to apply to serve on the Hillsboro School Board

Click here for the full calendar
January is School Board Appreciation Month
January is the month where we take a moment to express sincere gratitude to our volunteer School Board members for their hard work and dedication on behalf of all HSD students and staff throughout the year. Remember that there is currently a vacancy on the Board and if you are interested in applying, the deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 16.

MLK Day of Service
On Monday, Jan. 15, we will observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Though there will be no school for students that day and no work for many adults, we are encouraged to honor Dr. King's legacy of service by making it a day "on," rather than a day "off," by volunteering. Several organized projects are listed online, but you can also simply help out a friend or neighbor in need or organize your own community service effort, if you like.

Priority Window for In-District Student Transfers is Now Open
The priority window for HSD students wishing to transfer to a different school within the District for the 2018-19 school year is now open through Monday, Jan. 22. Resident students interested in continuing a current transfer or requesting a new transfer for next school year are encouraged to apply during this window for the best chance at approval. Additional information and forms are available on the Boundaries and Transfers section of our website.

Crystal Apple and Teacher of the Year Nominations

Nominations are currently being accepted for both the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce's Crystal Apple Awards and the State of Oregon's Teacher of the Year programs. Both have a deadline of Jan. 31, but the Chamber will only accept the first 50 Crystal Apple Award nominations, so don't delay!

Statewide Election on Measure 101 is Jan. 23
Oregon will hold a statewide special election on Tuesday, Jan. 23, to allow voters to weigh in on Measure 101. A "yes" vote on the measure approves a law passed by the Legislature during the last session to levy temporary assessments on insurance companies, some hospitals, and other providers of insurance or health coverage; a "no" vote on the measure rejects the law. The measure has implications for the state's 2017-19 budget, so please take some time to read through your voter pamphlet and cast your ballot by Jan. 23!
