Three Students Achieve Perfect ACT Score

Team Speedsters on to FIRST LEGO League World Championship

Team Speedsters from Hansen Elementary advanced to the FIRST LEGO League World Championship ( April 25-28, 2018) to be held in Detroit, Michigan.

Guided by adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem and are challenged to develop a solution. They must design, build, program a robot, then compete on a playing field. They also practice the Program's signature Core Values.

Speedsters is a five-member team from 6th grade Hansen Elementary comprising of Henry Wiering, Natalie Olsen, Param Sampat, Pranav Kota and Varun Gulwadi.

In 2016 they won 1st place in Champions Award and Robot Performance Award and were also nominated for Global Innovation Award at Cedar Falls regional competition.

In 2017 after winning 1st place in Champions Award and Robot Performance Award at the regional level, they proceeded to win 1st place in both Champions Award and Robot Performance award at the State Championship held in January at Iowa State University. The achievement was highlighted by their innovative solution to purify water for under-privileged households in developing countries using UV light powered by a hand crank mechanism.

They are one for the two teams from Iowa to advance to the World Championship. The event invites roughly 100 teams from 30 countries around the world.

CF CAPS Celebrates One Year Anniversary

The Cedar Falls CAPS program was initiated in January of 2017 and allows junior and senior students from Cedar Falls and Waterloo schools to explore careers and develop their technical and professional skills while working alongside professionals in the Cedar Valley. In order for CAPS to succeed, active participation is required from business partners in our community. Viking Pump in Cedar Falls was our first business partner and host site and continues providing resources and learning opportunities for our students interested in the technology and engineering fields.

Coaches vs. Cancer
The Cedar Falls Men's and Women's basketball teams, coaches, and Sophomore Leadership are teaming up in a national effort to fight cancer through the American Cancer Society's Coaches vs Cancer program.

Cedar Falls would like to help bring awareness to the fight against cancer by involving players and fans at the February 2nd women's varsity game and the February 9th men's varsity basketball game.

Fans can support the effort by purchasing a t-shirt and/or by making a pledge for total 3 point shots made by CF at each game. In addition, the Sophomore Leadership group will host a bake sale at each game. Come out and help support our teams and the American Cancer Society.

Meet Your Nurse
My name is Samantha Beenken, and I  am the school nurse for Holmes, Hansen and North Cedar.  I am  classically trained as an ER nurse, but love what I am able to do to help students within our schools. I did some work within the Waterloo school district earlier in the year but due to restructuring, I am now able to work in Cedar Falls. I am so excited about this transition and have thoroughly enjoyed how welcoming the Cedar Falls staff and families are. It makes the change very easy and rewarding! In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my son who will be two in April. He keeps me very busy!

Support Extending the State Penny Sales Tax
Please contact your legislator to give your support to
extending the State Penny Sales Tax !

The one-cent sales tax for school infrastructure is known in law as Secure an Advanced Vision for Education ( SAVE ). This critical funding stream is set to expire in December 2029, creating an abrupt end to millions of dollars of school funding for safe and modern buildings and other school infrastructure such as technology, while shifting the entire burden for school facility funding to property tax payers. In Cedar Falls, the extension would mean the reality of a new high school coming much sooner.
