Wanted: Large Landscapes for Program Proven to Reduce Irrigation Water Use

The Water Authority is seeking approximately 20 commercial-scale landscapes for participation in a program that has demonstrated significant outdoor water-use reductions through a combination of training, hardware upgrades and technical assistance valued at more than $15,000 per site.

Applicants have until March 31 to file statements of interest in the WaterSmart Landscape Efficiency Program, using the form at watersmartsd.org. An interest meeting is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 15 at San Diego Gas & Electric's Energy Innovation Center, 4760 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.  

Free WaterSmart Landscaping Class Series Returns in March

Looking for a way to spruce up your yard and trim water use at the same time? The Water Authority is here to help with two new sessions of the four-part WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series starting in March. 

These free, award-winning and interactive classes teach the steps for successfully converting high-water-use turf areas to WaterSmart landscapes during four classes over consecutive weeks. Classes are held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Water Authority's Kearny Mesa headquarters, 4677 Overland Ave. 

Upcoming four-class series:
  • March 5, 12, 19 and 26
  • March 28, April 4, 11 and 18
Deadline to apply for the Citizens Water Academy is Feb. 12

The Water Authority is accepting applications for its award-winning Citizens Water Academy, which provides emerging leaders with an inside look at ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for the San Diego region. 

Academy participants learn how the Water Authority helps protect the region's economy and quality of life through its water supply diversification strategy. The academy also covers facilities operations and maintenance, long-term planning, and water-use efficiency.   

The deadline to apply for the next Citizens Water Academy is Monday, Feb. 12. The spring sessions are: 
  • Session 1: Thursday, March 1, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Session 2: Wednesday, March 7, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Session 3: Saturday, March 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Enter to Win the WaterSmart Landscape Contest 

The annual WaterSmart Landscape Contest is back for 2018, offering residents of participating water agencies across San Diego County a chance to win $250 gift certificates and regional recognition. 

Judging criteria includes, overall design and attractiveness, plant selection, maintenance and irrigation efficiency. 

Entries will only be considered from homes serviced by participating water agencies. The deadline to enter online or by mail is April 30.

On Feb. 1, 10News aired a story about water supply conditions in San Diego County. 

Jeff Stephenson, a principal water resources specialist at the Water Authority, told 10News the region has sufficient water supplies thanks to ratepayer investments in drought-resilient resources.
