Loving and Listening: Theology Students Breaking Bread Together (3/15, 3/22)

As future clergy, scholars and community leaders, theology students in Boston will need to learn to communicate across deep divides of faith and spirituality. “Loving and Listening” is a series of conversations spurred on by the Lenten season of reflection and consecration where students from all religious traditions are invited to hear one another’s stories. RSVP by emailing Kelly Steinhaus at ksteinha@bu.edu and please indicate any dietary needs. Look for upcoming event details on facebook.

Dates:
-Thursday March 15 at 6pm at Boston University School of Theology, Room B-23, 745 Commonwealth Ave, Boston

CEDAR Summer School, "Hospitality and the Stranger," Call for Fellows

Since 2003 CEDAR–Communities Engaging with Difference and Religion has been organizing experientially based educational programs all over the world in which participants from many nations and diverse backgrounds, known as fellows, learn how to live with difference in their respective communities. This year's theme gets at the increasing political polarization and diversity in day to day life. What do our religious, moral, or political communities teach about encountering strangers? What resources for tolerance exist within our religious, moral, and political traditions to deal with the stranger?

To explore these questions, local, national, and international fellows will gather in the town of Abilene, Texas. Our schools do not stress any idea of “common ground” or shared values among participants. Rather, they are predicated on the existence of substantive differences—in values, histories, life circumstances, beliefs, worldviews, and economic statuses—between individuals and communities; differences that naturally resist elision. The school seeks to build a space in which a sense of shared belonging becomes possible despite those deep differences in lived experience. The program will combine lectures, experiential learning, and group work for an intensive period of challenging our own taken-for-granted assumptions about the lives of others and their experience of the world.
