Road Diet to Begin Spring 2018
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new safety-enhancing project along First Avenue!

We are excited to announce that the First Avenue Road Diet will move forward this spring after an extensive design, review and bidding process by Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and King of Prussia District.

This important transportation safety project will reduce the hazardous four-lane throughway to three lanes, which will include a dedicated center turn lane and a wider shoulder/bicycle lane. Additionally, a mid-block signalized pedestrian crosswalk will be added between Moore Road and American Avenue.

Communities have used Road Diets for over 40 years to reduce vehicle speeds, increase bicycle and pedestrian traffic and reduce vehicle accidents by up to 47%.

The First Avenue Road Diet is made possible through the collaboration of Upper Merion Township, King of Prussia District, which provided design funds and grant writing, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, which provided funding for the feasibility study, and PennDOT, which is administering the federal TAP grant that covers more than 65% of construction costs.

Construction bids on plans produced by Pennoni engineering firm were presented to PennDOT in December with the successful entry coming under initial estimates. Stay tuned for more info about the timeline and construction plans.
