More than 50 Georgetown faculty members from across the university shared research, ideas, goals and recommendations at a recent faculty forum held by Georgetown's Global Health Initiative, a priority area for GUMC and the university as a whole.


Inspired by her experiences in medical education, Carrie Chen, MD, PhD, has studied learning experiences and the assessment of learning. As associate dean for assessment and educational scholarship, Chen is helping the School of Medicine continue developing a medical school experience that both supports and educates students.

The partnership will expand the research and training missions in the biomedical sciences by enhancing the quality of science, technology and education at both institutions.

By pairing clinicians with medical students when they start medical school, the Cura Personalis Fellowship supports students' personal and professional development by focusing on leadership, mindfulness and wellbeing, and lifelong learning.


To mark International HPV Awareness Day (March 4), we re-visit this story about Richard Schlegel, whose work with colleagues earned him the patents on which the first HPV vaccine was based. The HPV vaccine is effective against more than six kinds of cancer, preventing countless cancer deaths.
 




Georgetown Honors Barbara Bayer
Georgetown University has selected Barbara Bayer, PhD, to deliver the 2018 Spring Faculty Convocation "Life of Learning" lecture. Since 1983, Bayer has been a faculty member of the Georgetown University Medical Center, where she has strengthened and enriched the community through her extraordinary leadership, teaching and scholarship. Bayer, professor and chair of neuroscience, is senior associate dean for biomedical graduate education. The Spring Faculty Convocation is Wednesday, March 21 at 5:00 p.m. in Gaston Hall.

Mark Dybul, MD, a professor in the department of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and faculty co-director of the Center for Global Health and Quality, has been named a co-chair of the Towards an HIV Cure Advisory Board at the International AIDS Society. Dybul (M'92) has worked on HIV and public health for more than 25 years and recently returned to Georgetown after serving as head of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Newport Receives Top Honors in Her Field
Elissa L. Newport, PhD, is the 2018 recipient of the Norman Anderson Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented by the Society of Experimental Psychologists on Saturday, March 3, the annual award recognizes outstanding achievement in experimental psychology in the United States and Canada. Newport is professor of neurology and director of the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery at Georgetown University and MedStar National Rehabilitation Network.

Ladan Eshkevari, PhD, CRNA, LAc, director of the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) program, has been selected to serve on the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The committee was established to provide independent guidance and expert advice to CMS on specific clinical topics. This appointment will allow Eshkevari to give her expert advice on a variety of pressing federal healthcare issues.

Waddah B. Al-Refaie, MD, FACS, has been named regional chief of surgical oncology and vice chair for research for the MedStar Washington Integrated Surgery Service. In these new roles, Al-Refaie will direct the regional surgical oncology program and the research activities of surgical services in the Washington region.

Frederick National Laboratory and Georgetown Launch Partnership
Georgetown University has partnered with the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The partnership will expand the research and training missions in the biomedical sciences by enhancing the quality of science, technology and education at both Georgetown and Frederick National Laboratory, the nation's only federal national laboratory wholly focused on discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences to improve human health.
 




Georgetown University's Global Health Initiative convened a briefing to discuss the state of the U.S. health care financing system, the current status of the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansions. The discussion was led by faculty experts and was aimed at health policy-focused embassy and mission officers.
