CMS Launches Data Submission System for Clinicians in the Quality Payment Program
Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that doctors and other eligible clinicians participating in the Quality Payment Program can begin submitting their 2017 performance data using a new system on the Quality Payment Program website (qpp.cms.gov). The data submission system is an improvement from the former systems under the CMS legacy programs, which required clinicians to submit data on multiple websites. Now, eligible clinicians will use the new system to submit their 2017 performance data for the Quality Payment Program during the 2017 submission period which runs from January 2, 2018 to March 31, 2018, except for groups using the CMS Web Interface whose submission period is January 22, 2018 to March 16, 2018.  Read more here
Healthy Healer - MGMA 2017: Doctors must remember their calling and create healthcare 3.0, says Zubin Damania
Zubin Damania, M.D., also known as the rapper ZDoggMD, got a standing ovation with his call to physicians and other healthcare professionals to remember that medicine is a calling and that they must create what he calls healthcare 3.0.

Damania, a keynote speaker at the Medical Group Management Association's annual conference here this week, said most people go into medicine because they want to use their skills to change the world. Years go by and they get worn down trying to get a prior authorization for a test a patient needs or trying to remember what MACRA stands for.  Read more here

After Disasters, PAs Step In To Provide Critical Medical Care
Several weeks after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico last September, local communities still did not have electricity or running water, and they lacked access to fresh foods, says Agustina Boehringer, MS, PA-C. Boehringer, chief PA with AFC Urgent Care in Massachusetts, went to the island through Heart to Heart International, a humanitarian development and crisis relief organization, to provide medical care for 11 days. Her team traveled with the U.S. Army National Guard from Patillas, a municipality on the southeastern coast, to communities that didn't have access to health care. They saw many patients who had gastroenteritis because of the lack of running water, or who had chronic issues like diabetes or hypertension.

But the biggest challenge that Boehringer's team-including a nurse practitioner, two nurses, and a paramedic-faced was communications, which was often nonexistent. When it was critical that they get care for a lymphoma patient, "we couldn't call for an ambulance or call to check in with the patient's doctor," says Boehringer, adding that her team was eventually able to evacuate the patient to a hospital.  Read more here
