HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope this very first issue of 2018 finds you having enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Season with friends and family. On Monday, January 8 classes resume for all students throughout OCPS as we officially begin the third quarter of the
2017-2018 school year (quarter 3 runs through March 15). Please note that there is no school on Monday, January 15 due to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
As for this edition, we carry forward into the New Year several noteworthy student, teacher, staff, and community recognitions made during the final days of 2017 which we wanted to share. You will also find our regularly reported "vital statistics" including key success indicators such as attendance, tardies, and reading activity. Daily attention to these measures becomes even more critical as we move closer to the spring FLDOE exams.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus Monday morning for an on-time successful start to 2018.
Welcome back Knights!
In Knights Honor,
Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Bonjour! The National Junior French Honor Society Community Service visited Mrs. Whalen's Gifted room and Mrs. Cooke's classroom at Moss Park Elementary School. They taught kids greetings, numbers, colors, songs, (Alouette, Frere Jaques, Vive le vent, Nous vous souhaitons un joyeux Noel) Simon says = Jaques a dit, days of the week, months, etc... via games, poetry, songs, reading. It was a blast! The students were mah-velous!
Did You Know???
LNMS' Voltaire Chapter of the National Junior French Honor Society, holds the distinction of being the very first middle school French Honor Society within the Orange County Public Schools!
Built to commemorate the centennial of the French Revolution, the lights of the Eiffel Tower in Paris break through the January winter clouds. Many forget that it was French naval forces in 1781 that cut off British General Cornwallis' escape at Chesapeake Bay (Yorktown) helping to end the war for the Americans.

Congratulations to Anastasia Fox who recently competed in the American Kennel Club Art Contest and won first place!

The Latino in Action Club, with the help from PTSA, showed appreciation for our bus drivers before the holidays for all that they do in keeping our students safe on the road.

Three Special Community Awards
All volunteers are worthy of recognition - but in every organization, there is someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty and accomplished truly incredible things. LNMS recognized three such outstanding volunteers from the Lake Nona community that have made a positive difference and contribution at our school.

Monday's Motivational Moment
|
THE WAY TO THE TOP
A group of visitors were standing at the base of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. waiting to go in. Suddenly the guide announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, there is currently a two-hour wait to ride the elevator to the top of the monument." The guide then paused a moment, smiled, and added, "However, there is no wait should you desire to take the stairs."
Here at the start of 2018, this story reveals something about success. In truth, there are no elevators to the top. If you want to make it there, you've got to take a long series of steps. How many steps, you're willing to take - and how long you're willing to keep climbing - determines how high you will go.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone returning to campus on Monday morning.
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
