DWR's Snow Survey

The state's Dept. of Water Resources carried out the first of its winter snow measurements in the mountains near Lake Tahoe last week and found a 'thimble of snow' - just 1.3 inches which is 3% of average for this time of year.

Plunging hollow rods into the snowpack to measure the snow depth, the surveyors use the event to measure water content in the snow, but also to educate Californians about the water supply. It's a crucial question since in a normal year, nearly two-thirds of California's' water supply starts as snow in the Sierras.

State water managers say it's too early to ring a drought alarm bell. California's weather is variable and experts expect more storms and snow to reach the state in the coming months.

One bright spot? The record amount of water that's in storage as a result of last year's wet winter. This includes more than one million acre-feet of water Metropolitan added to its storage supplies in Diamond Valley Lake, groundwater basins and other storage accounts.

For the first time ever, Metropolitan also  estimates that Southern Californians conserved more than one million arce-feet of water, reducing demands for water deliveries.

H2Love Recap

After a successful media campaign featuring the H2Love brand, Metropolitan's summer-fall water conservation advertising campaign has wrapped up. The results were impressive:

* Billboards, transit signs, trains and bus wraps: 351 million impressions

*Traffic and weather radio ads: 48 million impressions

*LA Galaxy sponsorship: 60 million impressions

*Print ads in Asian language newspapers: 1.2 million impressions

(An impression measures how many times an ad is seen)

The H2Love campaign also included digital advertising featuring a new video, and customized Pandora radio stations featuring water-themed song channels in English and Spanish.

Social media posts and search engine optimization to increase visits to Metropolitan's bewaterwise.com website, will continue year-round.

Here's a short  highlights video of the current campaign produced by the External Affairs Office.

What's next:  Metropolitan's board  authorized an RFP for professional services to help conduct a new campaign to promote conservation activities and rebate programs. It is scheduled to launch this summer.
New/Familiar Face

Metropolitan's new Assistant General Manager/Chief Administrative Officer Shane Chapman started last week. It's a new role for Shane, but he is no stranger to Metropolitan. Many employees will remember his previous work at Met from 1991-2010 when he served in many capacities including Resource Specialist, Program Manager, Revenue, Rates and Budget Manager and as the Assistant Group Manager in Water System Operations. He worked on some of the first IRPs, helped create our water rate structure, and was directly involved in many water operations activities and projects.

More recently, Shane was the General Manager of the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District for seven years. It was a small organization, but Shane helped direct some big accomplishments including building partnerships with those cities and their elected officials to ensure more sustainable water resources.

"Coming back to Metropolitan has always been in my mind," says Shane. As CAO, he will oversee management of Administrative Services, IT, Real Property, HR and Environmental Planning.

"There's never a dull day in the water world," according to Shane.  "I'm looking forward to working with everyone at Met to meet the many challenges we face."
