We are pleased to announce that the 2018 Community Investment Funds (CIF) Grant Cycle, and the Scholarship application process for the 2018-2019 school year, are both now open. In 2017 CIF grants of more than $282,000 were issued to 29 local organizations and nonprofits; and $304,700 in scholarships were awarded to 89 students.

Sari Raskin, Director of Grants and Community Leadership at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, has been selected to participate in the Council on Foundations 2018 Career Pathways program. This intensive, year-long leadership development program is designed to foster diverse talent and excellence among the philanthropic sector's senior executives.

In December the Business Women's Giving Circle (BWGC) announced the winners of its fourth annual grant cycle. A total of $53,000 was awarded to five nonprofit organizations and schools that provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Leadership and Entrepreneurship programs to girls and young women in Northern Virginia. To-date the BWGC has awarded $178,000 in grants.

The 2018 Community Investment Funds Grant Cycle is now open, and applications are due February 14. The Community Investment Funds are the signature grant cycle managed by the Community Foundation in which funds are invested in organizations serving the Northern Virginia community. This year funding will be provided in four areas of focus: Child and Youth Development, Education, Poverty Relief, and Aging.

Scholarship applications for the 2018-2019 school year are now open and eligible applications from graduating high school seniors in Northern Virginia may be submitted. The Community Foundation holds multiple scholarship funds and awards over $200,000 each year to help nearly 80 Northern Virginia students attend the college of their choice. Each scholarship has different selection criteria, allowing opportunities for a diverse range of students.

This interview is with Brandon H. Elledge, Community Foundation Board member, investment committee and Loudoun Impact Fund member, and Permanent Fund donor. He is a partner in Holland & Knight's Northern Virginia office in Tysons Corner.
Can you tell us about your support of the Permanent Fund and what it means to you?
My wife Amy and I decided to support the Permanent Fund last year, and frankly it was an easy decision to make. This was our way to - in the words of the Community Foundation - "give like it matters." The Community Foundation, with its knowledge, trust, and networks developed over 40 years of effective philanthropy in the region, can use our and the other continuing donations to the Permanent Fund to help transform these gifts into a meaningful impact on peoples' lives throughout Northern Virginia. To make a difference in the area we call home is very meaningful to us. We also believe the Permanent Fund is an important strategic asset for the Foundation with its various other donor-advised funds.

If you have a life insurance policy that has outlasted its original purpose, consider designating it to the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. For example, you may have purchased a policy to provide for minor children and they are now financially independent adults.

- If we retain the policy to maturity, or you name us as a beneficiary, once the policy matures, the proceeds of your policy will be paid to our organization so that we can use the proceeds to further our charitable work
