A Message from the Superintendent
|
The Lovejoy High School Choir and Theatre Arts departments presented The Sound of Music this past weekend. The show was excellent and serves as a great reminder of the multi-talented students you send us each day. I enjoyed the opportunity to see so many of you on Saturday. Congratulations to the cast and crew of this exemplary production.

We are saddened to share the news of the loss of a Lovejoy parent. Casey Sullivan passed away from an illness. He is survived by his wife Jamie Sullivan and their three children Ainsley (WSMS), Ryder (WSMS), and Piper (HES). Friends and family members have established a "You Caring" page in support of the Sullivan family. Please click here if you would like to make a donation in honor of Casey.
We will send a special communication when information regarding funeral arrangements is available.

Fourth Graders Experience
Texas History
|
Lovejoy Elementary students travelled to Waco and Austin to experience fourth grade Texas History. Students visited the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Texas State Capitol, and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The students are pictured below.
Puster Elementary 4th grade students will make the same trip on May 11th and Hart Elementary 4th grade students will make the trip on May 25th. We look forward to sharing their photos with you at that time.

Upcoming 2018 Primary Elections
|
Texas Voter Registration Applications are available in the front office of all campuses and at the Administration Building. The application may be used for a new application, a change of address, name or other information, or to request a replacement card.
February 5th is the deadline to register if you plan to vote in the March 6th primary. Early voting begins on February 20th, and Election Day is March 6th. In past primary elections, approximately 20% of registered voters voted. In many races, the actual contest is in the primary as the November general election is a foregone conclusion. Our PTA is providing some additional information below.

First Annual STEM Festival
With the New Year and new semester, we enjoy not only the successes of the first part of the school year but also look forward to the events and opportunities of the spring semester.
One of the events which we are excited about is our first annual STEM Festival at Lovejoy High School on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This will be a great opportunity to come see, do, and learn all about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Lovejoy ISD. Our STEM Council has planned various guest speakers, demonstrations, competitions, Makerspace opportunities, and robotics experiences for a fun, engaging day for students and adults of Lovejoy and beyond.
While we are still finalizing details for the day, we would love your support and participation. If you work in the STEM fields and are interested in volunteering or being a guest speaker, please help us make this a wonderful day of learning and fun.

Lovejoy Boys Basketball
The Leopards played a hard-fought contest at West Mesquite, coming home with the road win. They played great on defense, and had a monstrous third quarter to go up and stay up for the win 40-30. The win brings the 15-5A record to 2-5. The Leopards will start the backside of district play at home against Forney on Tuesday and then travel to Wylie East next Friday night.
The JV Black Leopards played well offensively, but could not do the job defensively on the road at West Mesquite, taking the loss 59-55. The JV Black Leopards travel to Wylie to take on the raiders of Wylie East Friday night at 5:30, and then return home Tuesday night to take on the Forney Jackrabbits, also at 5:30 PM.
The JV Red Leopards will take on Plano Shepton Tuesday night at Leopard Gym at 7:00 PM.
The Lovejoy Freshmen basketball team finished off the first half of district 6-0, beating West Mesquite Friday night 57-43. The Leopards played great second-half defense, only allowing West Mesquite 15 points. The freshmen team looks to continue their dominance the second half of district, taking on Forney Tuesday night and then traveling to Wylie East on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Lovejoy Girls Basketball
The Lovejoy Lady Varsity Leopards lost their first district 15-5A game this past Tuesday night, falling to Highland Park 56-51, and bringing their 15-5A record to 7-1. The Lady Leopards took on the Lady Wranglers of West Mesquite last Friday night with an impressive performance, setting a school record for the fewest points allowed in a game with their 58-15 win. The Lady Leopards current 15-5A record is 8-1, and 23-6 for the 17-18 season.
On Friday, the team will play Wylie East at home at 7:00 PM. Both Lovejoy and Wylie East are 9-1 in district 15-5A. The winner of this game will take sole possession of first place in district. The Lady Leopards invite you to attend the game and support the team by wearing black on Friday. Both JV teams will play at 5:30 PM, followed by the varsity at 7:00 PM.
The JV Leopards overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Highland Park 58-44. The JV Black team is now 8-0 in district play and 18-3 overall for the season. Lovejoy improved the district record to 9-0 with a 52-10 victory over West Mesquite. With the win, the JV improved its overall record to 19-4. The JV will play Wylie East on Friday.
The Freshman took an early lead against Grapevine, keeping up the pressure throughout and ultimately defeating the Lady Mustangs 40-13. A strong first quarter by the Bishop Lynch Lady Friars left the Lady Leopards unable to recover, despite putting up a strong defensive effort. The Leopards fell to Bishop Lynch 32-15. The Freshman defeated the Lady Mustangs 40-13. The Freshmen Lady Leopards will return to action this Friday night against Wyle East.

The Leopard Golf Teams will return to the links in February with the following Tournaments.

Boys Varsity 1 and 2 - Rockwall Athletic Club Rockwall on the 9th and 10th
Boys JV 1 - Heritage Ranch on the 13th

Lovejoy Powerlifting
The Lovejoy boys and girls powerlifting team competed in its first meet of the season at Princeton High School. The boys had a strong showing, finishing 6th out of 17 schools. Tyler Beidleman competed in his first ever meet, finishing in 4th place with a 1080 total in the 275 pound class. Kade Ashley led the way as the top Lovejoy lifter. He finished 1st place in the 220 pound class with a 1440 total. Brock Prenglar finished 3rd in the 220 pound class with a 1270 total. Sergio Arriaga also competed in the 220 pound class, finishing 5th with a 1220 total. Hudson Wallace finished 4th in the 165 pound class, finishing 4th with a 1055 total.
In their first ever meet and in very tough weight classes, Hunter Smith 132, Ryan Collins 148, and Ethan Cowan 148 competed impressively. Ally Carraway was Lovejoy's lone female lifter. She finished 4th with a 735 total and had a PR (personal record) deadlift of 315.
The next meet is January 27th at North Forney High School.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
The Lovejoy Boys Soccer Teams have been practicing these past two weeks in preparation for the upcoming 15-5A District schedule. The Leopards are scheduled to kick off their District season at Home against the Highland Park Scots at Leopard Stadium.
The JV boys went 3-0 in the Jonny Baggett Memorial Tournament at Birdville High School last weekend. On Friday, the boys beat Azle High School 5-0. On Saturday morning, the boys beat Richland High School 6-0, and also defeated Denton High School 9-0 in their final game Saturday afternoon. The Junior Varsity now has a record of 5-1 heading into district play. Game times are 5:30 PM for the JV Boys, followed by the Varsity Boys at 7:30 PM.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Varsity team had a great start to the Governor's Cup tournament with a 5-0 win over San Marcos. Goals were scored by Bella Kusgen, Jessie Maashio, Taylor Thompson, Chloe Brown, and Sadie Dale. The Ladies followed up their opening round win with another 5-0 win over Giddings High School. Taylor Thompson (2), Megan White, Leighton Etchieson, and Sadie Dale each scored goals for the win. The Lady Leopards concluded the tournament with a 1-1 tie against Austin High School. The lone goal was scored by Jessie Maashio, with an assist from Andee Richardson. The Lovejoy Varsity Girls will conclude their pre-district schedule this Friday against Frisco Lebanon in Frisco.

Lovejoy Swim and Dive
The Leopards had a great start to the Championship season, with 26 swimmers ready to advance to the Region 3-5A Swimming and Diving Championships in Frisco on February 2nd and 3rd. The Leopards won eight individual events and one relay at Saturday's District 12-5A competition. Senior Raime Jones won the 200 and 500 yard freestyle, setting a new school record in the 100 yard freestyle on her way to being named the District 12-5A Female Swimmer of the Meet. Juniors Natalie Womack (100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke) and James Vaughn (100 Butterfly), and Sophomores Kelsey Carroll (100 Breaststroke) and Jed Jones (200 IM, 100 Butterfly) also added individual District Titles at the meet. The Girls 400 Freestyle Relay (Raime Jones, Sydney Myers, Sloan Carevic, and Natalie Womack) finished off the meet with a victory. Lovejoy finished a close 2nd overall at the meet to Highland Park in both Boys and Girls Divisions.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Leopard Tennis Teams will kick off their spring season next week with both Junior Varsity and Varsity participating in tournaments. JV will be playing in Grapevine and Varsity will be in Frisco. Good luck to both squads.

Lovejoy Track
The Leopard Track program is back on the track, continuing its preparation for the 2018 15-5A District Track Meet to be hosted at Lovejoy High School Track on April 5th and 7th. The next scheduled meet is Saturday, February 10th, at Lovejoy Leopard Stadium at 9 AM.

Lovejoy Wrestling
The Leopards wrestled with a young lineup last Thursday, as some men were out due to injury or illness. Creekview won the dual, but Lovejoy is confident going into the district tournament with our full lineup. The women also wrestled against Creekview High School.
The Varsity men and women traveled to Vernon, with the men wrestling three duals on Friday night, and finishing with a solid 2-1 record despite forfeiting 4 weights. This pushes their dual record to 8-6 for the season. The men had two solid wins against schools from Oklahoma, defeating IKE by a score of 43-36 and Mangum by a score of 36-27. The Leopards then fell to Vernon 51-21.
The women each wrestled 2 matches Friday night against Boswell, Lubbock Coronado, and Vernon, with Lilly Musselman, Katherine Heath, Alex LeFort, and Morgan Elvin going a combined 7-1 overall. With 10 men and 4 women wrestling, the team finished the day with 8 placers. On the men's side, freshman Ralph Rucker once again led the team with another finals finish, placing second. Sophomore David Gold wrestled well into the semifinals before placing 4th. Freshman Jakob Underwood put together a great tournament finishing 5th, while winning 4 of 5 matches. Junior Austen Shelley finished in 6th place with a 3-2 record.
All four women placed and were led by championship performances from Sophomore Alex LeFort and Junior Morgan Elvin. Sophomore Katherine Heath placed 5th, and Junior Lilly Musselman placed 6th.
The Lady Leopards will be in action Tuesday night competing in the 9-5A District Duals at Sloan Creek Intermediate School Main Gym at 5:30 PM. The Men's team will compete in the 9-5A District Dual Meet this Thursday at Princeton HS at 5:30 PM.

Volunteers Needed for
The Frisco College Baseball Classic
The Frisco College Baseball Classic is returning to the Dr. Pepper Stadium, March 2nd - 4th. Texas A&M, Baylor, Louisiana Tech, and Cal Berkeley will be playing in a round robin tournament.
The Frisco College Baseball Classic is partnering with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for this event and is looking for volunteers to help throughout the weekend. Students in grades 8 - 12 may

Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts
An exciting new event will be held at the elementary campuses this spring: Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts. This event will accomplish two things: Campus Campouts will provide a memorable experience for the parents and students at the elementary level, and will also generate funds through business sponsors and a camp fee. The funds raised from this event will help to replace state funding lost from the last legislative session. The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. Lovejoy High School Band Mattress Sale Fundraiser
February 10th
The Lovejoy High School Band will be hosting its 1st annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser on February 10th from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School Band Hall.
Do you need to replace a bed in your home? Know someone who does? There will be over 30 bed styles on display for customers to try. The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores. In addition to beds, there will also be pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, and adjustable power bases. Financing options will also be available.

24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10.
