NEWS AND HAPPENINGS
Gompers Elementary 2018 Battle of the Books

The annual Battle of the Books Competition occurred on February 21 with great success! Two 4th grade teams and three 5th grade teams spent the past 3 months reading as many books as possible from their respective class lists. They then met on the day of the battle to work as a team to identify what statements about the stories came from which book, as well as who the author of the book was. The point difference between the top two 5th grade teams was only 4 points, while the 4th grade teams were only separated by 1 question!
Results are as follows:

5th grade - 1st place:                                 2nd place:                                   3rd place:
Muhammad, T'iozja, Finn       Lola, Khary, Angelina, Kayleigh          Isiah, Sami, Mikayla, Grant
        Brian + Lane

                            4th grade - 1st place:                                       2nd place:
Angy, Kristina, Jane                                   Ava, Leif, Megan

Each of the winning grade level teams will now go on to compete at the NorthEast MMSD Battle of the Books at Lakeview Public Library on Thursday, March 8th, where they will compete against Lindbergh, Sandburg, Mendota and Lake View. Good luck to our champions!
MESSAGE FROM OUR CROSSING GUARDS

Safety Notes
Thank you students, faculty and families! Students crossing the streets to
and from school  do a great job at remembering to stop at the red line on the sidewa lk. They wait for the Crossing Guard to stop traffic, give the "all clear" and then cross the street.  Thank you also to the parents and staff who remember to do this. You are being great role models of s afety for your child or children.

Drivers are reminded that state law requires all vehicles to come a complete stop at least 10 feet from the crosswalk when a Crossing Guard is entering or is in the crosswalk. The vehicle should remain completely stopped until all pedestrians, including the Crossing Guard,
are safely back on the curb.  Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe!
