Using a unique strain of genetically engineered mice, a team of neuroscientists at  Florida Atlantic University's Brain Institute , and collaborators discovered a surprising response to cocaine in these mice. Results from the study, show that these genetically engineered mice failed to exhibit the hyperactivity seen in normal mice when given cocaine and didn’t run around.
FAU Jupiter will host “ SYNAPSE 2019 ,  an annual neuroscience networking event in collaboration with Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Florida Research Institute. More than 150 of the brightest research scientists and students throughout the region are expected to gather at MPFI to network and share their research findings on Jan. 25, 2019 at 4:00 pm.
Wilkes Honors College  students, Owen Silvera, and Jillian Hanley received a scholarship to attend the 34th annual Everglades Coalition  conference in Duck Key, Fla. The experience was made possible by the efforts of Cara Capp, an Honors College alumna.
Student Crisis Assistance Training
Nearly 40  Florida Atlantic University John D. MacArthur Campus  faculty and staff participated in a student crisis assistance workshop. Laura Vernon, Ph.D., associate professor of Clinical Psychology in the  Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College  hosted the discussion based training as part of Thrive, an initiative aimed at providing professors, administrators, and staff the tools needed to recognize the warning signs and refer students to appropriate services.
The Florida Atlantic University's Brain Institute and Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is proud to announce the addition of Ning Quan, Ph.D., Professor of Biosciences and Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State.
Quan will soon relocate his National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded laboratory to the FAU John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter.
Florida Atlantic University ’s  College of Engineering and Computer Science in collaboration with researchers from FAU’s  Schmidt College of Medicine   and FAU’s   Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute one of the university's four research pillars, has received a $652,820 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish the first NSF-funded Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning (AIDL) Training and Research Laboratory in Florida.
The  platform  will be shared across FAU’s campuses.
Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College students interested in  computer science and engineering  can pursue a joint Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree at the Honors College and a Master’s of Science degree through the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Students complete the prerequisite coursework for the Master’s degree while at the Honors College in their first 4 years, and can complete the master's coursework in an additional year in this “4+1” program.
Outreach propels promise!  Florida Atlantic University Wilkes Honors College and  FAU Brain Institute students are transforming the future for local kids at the Edna Runner Tutorial Center thanks to a generous gift from alumna Alice Hudson '77.

Florida Atlantic University serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students at sites throughout its six-county service region in southeast Florida. FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus, located in downtown Abacoa offers a variety of upper-division and graduate course. The campus houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the largest lifelong learning program in the nation. The Jupiter Life Science Initiative unites scientists and students in research and training programs and leverages FAU’s close affiliations with Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute, also located on the campus. As part of this effort, the university-wide Brain Institute launched in 2016 and is a hub of cutting-edge, multidisciplinary neuroscience activity that builds on existing neuroscience centers and programs within FAU. The Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology offers research and training programs in molecular biology and biotechnology and serves as a link between FAU and other institutions and industries in this field.
