March 2018
Foreword from the Executive Director: Expand the Global One System and Make the Planet a Better Place for Everyone!
Our interconnected world is facing numerous dynamic and important changes including urbanization, migration, threats of peace and security, deforestation, climate change, food insecurity, water crises, spread of diseases, social and economic issues (Global Risk Forum, 2016).

These risks provide opportunities for universities to make a global impact and to position themselves as a reputable global "implementing partners." Unive rsities face critical challenges of building students' capacity while enabling them with global competency to help them understand complex dynamics of global issues, be prepared for a successful career and remain engaged to become citizens of the world.  The planet needs a large cadre o f future professionals in wide varieties of disciplines, both in the developed a nd developing regions, to address such issues effectively.

Using its Global One Health model, Ohio State is forging ahead to contribute its share. To that goal, it inaugurated its African regional office last November. With the great need in the region, the office now staffs more than 20 talented and multi-disciplinary professionals. Together with the Ohio State faculty, students, staff and strategic international partner institutes in Latin America, Africa and Asia, the team is making critical grass-root contributions, some of which are reported in this edition. GOHi also realizes the greater need of expanding this system to other priority disciplines beyond health, such as climate, engineering, business, agriculture and others in respective strategic partner regions of the world such as Brazil, China, India and beyond.

Together, let's make the planet a better place for generations to come. GOHi invites you all to be partners, collaborators, donors and leaders. Please visit us at globalonehealth.osu.edu.

Landers' Fulbright Work Continues in Eastern Africa
As a recent Fulbright Award recipient from The Ohio State University's College of Nursing, Associate Professor Timothy Landers, PhD (second from right), has been living in Ethiopia with his family since September 2017. Landers' work focuses on supporting capacity building initiatives surrounding infection prevention control and enhancing evidence-based practice outcomes in several regions throughout Ethiopia including Gondar and Haramaya.

The primary focus of Landers' initial work has been to support the newly established nursing PhD program and continue to develop GOHi's links with Ethiopia addressing antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention. He has been working with a cohort of six students in one of Ethiopia's first doctoral programs in nursing. In addition to teaching, he has been working with clinicians and in the laboratory in support of the infection prevention program. Landers is also working with a group of hospitals in Nairobi, Kenya developing a three-week evidence-based infection prevention and control course to be delivered in April.
Stevenson with Ohio State Pharmacy Students in Gondar
Kurt Stevenson, MD, from The Ohio State University's Colleges of Medicine and Public Health (pictured on far right) was in Ethiopia for several weeks in January with two Ohio State College of Pharmacy students, Lynn Wardlow and Megan Shah. Dr. Stevenson's work in Ethiopia spans several years and includes significant collaboration with colleagues at the University of Gondar in Northern Ethiopia.

During their trip, they worked closely with the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the University of Gondar to provide technical assistance with their operations and interventions. They presented lectures on infectious diseases and were also able to share how they treat infections here at Ohio State during patient rounds, while also learning about University of Gondar's treatments.
WHIP3 TB Clinical Trial Continues to Successfully Build Momentum
As part of the capacity building mission of GOHi, a two-day workshop was held in Hawassa, Ethiopia that focused on Good Clinical Practice and clinical trial procedures for 15 members of the WHIP3 TB (Tuberculosis prevention study) team.

WHIP3 TB team members, Dr. Getnet Yimer, Dr. Achenf Kidane, Dr. Hagos Biluts and Mr. Haileleul Bisrat visited the Aurum South Africa TB Clinical Trial site and attended a workshop on participant retention and data management updates.
GOHi's Program and Outreach Manager Marks Progress on Projects in Addis Ababa
Ashley Bersani, GOHi's program and outreach manager, met with key partners in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USAID, and the Center for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa) from February 13-22. Bersani discussed major strategic priorities for the upcoming funding cycles and also addressed best practices for financial management with regional partners in Gondar, Ethiopia.

As ongoing regional activities such as the CDC Global Health Security (GHS) project approach their midpoints, Bersani and the GOHi team look forward to highlighting tangible outcomes in the areas of zoonotic disease detection/prevention and addressing antimicrobial resistance. The overarching goal is to enhance sustainability of these initiatives beyond the project's completion date.

"That's what we're really aiming for within the CDC GHS framework," said Bersani. "To help to develop the capacity within Ethiopian institutions to protect and enhance public health and promote global health security as an international priority." Year three of the five year CDC GHS cooperative agreement with Ohio State begins April 1.

Bersani's trip also included promotion and planning for the upcoming seventh annual One Health Summer Institute in Addis Ababa and Gondar, Ethiopia and Nairobi, Kenya.
