Georgina Economic Development Updates
Town of Georgina Dropping in at the Toronto International Bicycle Show.bike
The Town of Georgina dropped into the Toronto International Bicycle Show this past weekend in partnership with York Region. Georgina was promoting the many cycling routes and trails that are available in the municipality, which make it one of the top destinations to visit for bicycle enthusiasts of all abilities.
With 52km of shoreline on Lake Simcoe, there are many scenic views for the avid road cyclist and for the trail rider there are the North Shore Trails at the Georgina ROC. BMX riders can take advantage of the Bike Park also located at The ROC.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport Cycling is a growing sector in Ontario with 1.7 million cycling visits, accounting for 1.2% of total visits to Ontario Cycling visitors spent $428 million, or 1.8% of total visitor spending in Ontario. Cycling visitors generally spend more on average per trip than other visitors, $255/trip for cycling tourists compared to $171/trip for total visitors. 83% of cycling visits/trips were calculated as being overnight.

A recommendation for businesses is to ensure that you register on the Ontario by Bike program to take advantage of extra exposure for Cycle Tourism.
Check First Before You Buy.check
construction_hard_hat.jpgI f you are wishing to open or expand a business ensure that your business equipment and materials comply with the Ontario Building Code (OBC). As a business owner you have a substantial investment that can be seriously jeopardized through code violations. A review of plans prior to construction, and inspections made during construction verify that building code regulations have been followed.

Equipment such as exhaust hoods, grease interceptors and other construction materials must comply with the Ontario Building Code and reference Standards. Check with your designer and/or the building code prior to purchasing equipment and materials and obtain a building permit prior to carrying out works.

There are many materials sold in the market that do not comply with required Canadian Standards.

Click Here to view the Ontario Building Code. Check with the Town's Building Division to confirm if a permit is required at 905-476-4301 or [email protected].
Do you have an active building permit?permit
Did you know that builders and property owners that have building permits issued for
work on their property are required to contact the Building Division to schedule
mandatory inspections?

Building permit fees are based on a fixed number of inspections over a certain period of time. When permits remain active for too long, the cost of the permit increases with additional inspection and administrative fees. Also, permits transfer with the sale of a home. Purchasing title insurance does not necessarily mean that you do not have an outstanding permit.

If you suspect or have a building permit on your property, call the Building Division at 905-476-4301 or email [email protected]. Don't get caught with the possibility of unwanted fees!

BUSINESS TIPS
Make Fewer Promises.business

It's a Saturday night. Jeff, the on-call Planning Enforcement Officer for the local council, is just about to sit down to a takeaway meal and a movie with his wife when his phone rings. Residents close to a new nightclub want him to come and assess the noise levels at the venue. Even before the conversation starts, Jeff is not primed to listen. What he thinks is a good outcome getting the caller off the line in the quickest time possible, doesn't align with what the caller thinks is a good outcome-Jeff dropping everything and getting around to the nightclub in the next thirty minutes.

Misaligned expectations are the greatest source of dissatisfaction in any service interaction. You can't begin to satisfy or delight your customer unless you are prepared to meet his expectations. Two things need to be in place to make that happen. Firstly, you need to understand the customer's desired outcome. And secondly, you need to have the resources and the willingness to meet it.

If the last thing Jeff wants to do when he's on call is get in his car to investigate complaints, then it's unlikely he'll satisfy ratepayers. The way he handles incoming calls is affected by his desire to enjoy a quiet night at home. His tone will be defensive and his manner abrupt. The organization does more harm than good by having a 24-hour hotline that sets the expectation that an officer might visit in an emergency if that's unlikely to happen.

Excellence is about making fewer promises that you always keep.
