The Skokie Home Scoop  - January 19, 2018

Dear Skokie Families,

Believe it or not, it is time to sign up for the winter Parent/Teacher Conference period. Below are links to conference schedules. If you see your child's advisory/team name below, click on the link to sing up for a conference time. Advisories/Teams not linked below will be reaching out to families on their own to arrange conference times.

The winter conference period is another opportunity for parents and teachers (and students, in the case of sixth grade) to sit down together, reflect on growth and progress, monitor goals and plan for the remainder of the year together. Keep in mind that your child's teachers have a tremendous amount of information they look forward to sharing with you. Given that each conference is twenty minutes in length, we want to make the most of that time. If you have specific questions or concerns that you would like to address either before or during the conference, it is helpful to reach out to the teachers prior to the conference appointment so that we can plan our time accordingly.

Finally, I would highly encourage anyone in our school community to mark their calendar for Tuesday, January 23, 7pm. We will be hosting another community event to provide information around Future Ready D36. This event will take place in the Community Room at The Skokie School. Expect to hear information focused on environmental design, student learning and research on best practices.

Enjoy the warmer temps this weekend, and an additional day off on Monday for our students. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday for another short week!

Most Sincerely,

Follow us on Twitter: @skokie36

Is Your Child Starting Kindergarten in 2018?
To pre-register your child for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact the District office at 847-446-9400 to begin the process. This early pre-registration process helps ensure that The Winnetka Public Schools have proper staffing and most accurate school assignments.  Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2018, are eligible to enroll.   Click here for documents required for new students.  Registration packets are available at the District Office ( 1235 Oak St .). Children will not be considered enrolled until residency documentation is verified and all forms are submitted. If you have any questions, please contact the District Office at 847-446-9400 .

Winter MAP Testing
We are approaching our second testing window for the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test, which will take place between January 16 - 26, 2018.  Your child's school or teacher will inform you of his or her specific testing dates.

Similar to the fall, all students  in Grades 3 - 8 will take one Reading Test and one Math test.   MAP is a computer-adaptive test, which means every student receives a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions.  This provides a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student's learning level.  The purpose of the second testing session is to provide teachers with midyear progress data that will help inform their instruction as they move forward into the school year. Student  Reports are sent home at the end of the school year with fall to spring growth measures. Additional information on the MAP assessment may be found on our district website at www.winnetka36.org/map .

Early Childhood Screenings
The Department of Student Services will be holding early childhood screenings on March 13th, with registration on February 13th. If you are a Winnetka resident and have any concerns about your child's development in the areas of speech, language, coordination, hearing, vision, learning readiness, or emotional maturity, you are encouraged to register your child for an early childhood screening. The intent of the screening is to identify children who may have delays in their development and may require specific supports to address these delays. To be eligible for this screening, your child must be at least three years old. Click here for full information about the screening.

Opportunity for Students

The event will be held on February 10, 2018, from 8:30- 2:00 p.m. at Westgate Elementary School in Arlington Heights. What makes the conference unique is that it is completely presented by students for students with adult volunteers from local schools and the community to help the day run smoothly.

SIT is a great opportunity for your child to learn from their peers or to step into a leadership role by sharing their expertise.  Space is limited and registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis.   For information and registration visit   https://goo.gl/ApxAP2.
